BudgIT Sierra Leone was proud to contribute to the regional dialogue “Democracy on Trial: The West African Verdict on Who Really Holds Power.”

Our Program Officer emphasized a simple message: democracy must be measured not assumed.

He elaborated on the following Insights
• Elections matter only when results are transparent and trusted.
• Strong institutions are judged by outcomes, not existence.
• Parliamentary oversight needs real follow-through on audit findings.
• Fiscal transparency allows citizens to track budgets and public projects.
• Accountability weakens between elections and must become continuous.
• Political inclusion is improving, but economic and decision-making inclusion remain uneven.
• Executive power concentration continues to shape governance outcomes.

Sierra Leone’s democracy is functioning but under structural strain electorally stable yet institutionally fragile.
As a civic-Tech organization we hold on to the belief that Democracy deepens through:
• Transparency
• Institutional independence
• Citizen participation
• Service delivery accountability

Democracy does not end at the ballot box accountability must work every day.

BudgIT Sierra Leone Participates in the NGO Week Open Day Celebration at the Parliament of Sierra Leone

BudgIT Sierra Leone participated in the NGO Week Open Day Celebration held at the Parliament of Sierra Leone as part of activities marking the national NGO Week. The Open Day served as an important platform for engagement between Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and Members of Parliament (MPs), aimed at strengthening collaboration, improving mutual understanding, and enhancing governance outcomes.

The engagement provided an opportunity for the NGO community to directly interact with Members of Parliament, discuss operational challenges, explore partnership opportunities, and clarify institutional roles and responsibilities. The dialogue also focused on managing public expectations and addressing prevailing perceptions regarding the work and impact of NGOs within national development processes.

The event was graced by Honorable Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, Vice President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, who underscored Government’s commitment to fostering an enabling environment for NGO operations. In his address, he emphasized that platforms such as the NGO Open Day are critical in bridging communication gaps between state institutions and non-state actors, while promoting sustained collaboration through open and constructive dialogue.

Honorable Segepoh Solomon Thomas, Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, reaffirmed that the engagement strengthens transparency and deliberate coordination between Parliament and civil society actors. He highlighted that sustainable national development depends on institutional coherence, shared accountability, and participatory governance frameworks that actively involve both state and non-state stakeholders.

Additional remarks were delivered by the Leader of Government Business, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on NGOs, and representatives from the National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA), who collectively emphasized the importance of structured dialogue, regulatory clarity, and collaborative implementation of development interventions.

As a participating organization, BudgIT Sierra Leone leveraged the Open Day to engage policymakers on issues relating to transparency, accountability, citizen participation, and effective public financial management. The engagement reinforced BudgIT Sierra Leone’s commitment to promoting open governance and strengthening partnerships between Parliament and civil society organizations in advancing inclusive and sustainable development in Sierra Leone.

BudgIT Sierra Leone welcomes continued institutional dialogue platforms that promote trust, coordination, and evidence-based collaboration between government institutions and the NGO sector.

Making WASH Work for Communities: Data-Driven Advocacy for Transparent Service Delivery.

Strong WASH systems save lives, protect dignity, and strengthen communities and accountability is key to making this possible.
In continuation of the WASH Systems Strengthening for Health Project, BudgIT Sierra Leone, in partnership with GOAL Sierra Leone and WASH-Net is promoting evidence-based advocacy by supporting civil society organizations across Kambia, Moyamba, Kenema, Bombali, and Kono districts to strengthen transparency and accountability in the WASH sector.

On 7th February 2026, BudgIT Sierra Leone successfully completed its CSO Training in Kenema. A diverse group of CSOs and key stakeholders participated in a practical training on the WASH Social Accountability Tool. The training equipped participants with the skills needed to demand better planning, financing, and delivery of WASH services at the community level.

This training is an important step in rolling out a community-level budget tracking and monitoring tool. The tool will help CSOs track public WASH investments, generate real-time evidence and amplify community voices through data-driven advocacy. By strengthening the technical and practical capacity of CSOs to use the M-Water Platform as a tracking and feedback tool, the project empowers local actors to take action, hold duty bearers accountable, and support measurable improvements in WASH service delivery across the districts.

Together with our partners, GOAL Sierra Leone and WASH-Net, BudgIT Sierra Leone remains committed to strengthening citizen participation, promoting budget transparency, and improving public service delivery outcomes in Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone: Let’s Strengthen Budget Transparency Together

As we step into 2026, BudgIT Sierra Leone is excited to scale up our work to make budget
information simple, accessible, and useful for citizens and to strengthen accountability across the country.
This year, we’re focused on simplifying the 2026 National Budget, training civil society
organizations, and rolling out citizen-friendly tools that help communities monitor public projects, especially in the WASH sector. Through radio discussions, town halls, community outreach, and social media, we’re empowering citizens to ask questions and demand better services.
Some of our achievements in 2025 include the following:

an increased radio and television programmes reaching a wider audience in Sierra Leone.
- We strongly partnered with government MDAs and WASH actors.
- We trained over 90 CSOs on budget tracking and WASH monitoring in Bombali, Kambia,
and Moyamba districts.
- We launched the Simplified 2025 Citizens’ Budget
What’s Coming in 2026
- Simplified 2026 Citizens’ Budget (English & Krio)
- More radio, TV, and community town hall meetings
- Rollout of M-Water and Tracka to monitor WASH and public projects
- Expansion of BudgIT Youth Clubs in tertiary institutions

Sierra Leone’s Q1 & Q2 Budget Report is out - and the numbers tell a powerful story.
Domestic revenue rose by 28.77%, driven mainly by income taxes. But here’s the shocker 👇

Zero revenue from mineral resources and fisheries… again.
Two of our biggest natural wealth sources contributed nothing to the national purse in both quarters.

How long can we keep depending only on taxpayers while our natural industries remain silent?

Let’s talk. Let’s question. Let’s demand accountability.
🇸🇱 Our budget is our business.

BudgIT Sierra Leone trains CSOs on the WASH Social Accountability Tool in Moyamba.

On Friday, 31st October 2025, BudgIT Sierra Leone, in partnership with local stakeholders, organized a Civil Society Organizations (CSO) Training on the WASH Social Accountability Tool at the Moyamba District Council Hall.

This engagement brought together representatives from CSOs, the District Health Management Team, Budget Oversight Committees, local authorities, health champions, and the media to strengthen their capacity in promoting transparency and accountability within the WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) sector.

Through practical, hands-on sessions, participants were trained on the M-Water Platform a digital tool that enables real-time tracking, reporting, and feedback on WASH service delivery at health facilities. The workshop also emphasized data-driven advocacy, budget monitoring, and community-led accountability, ensuring local actors are empowered to drive lasting change.

By building these local networks and enhancing digital literacy, BudgIT Sierra Leone continues to advance its mission of using data, technology, and citizen participation to improve governance and public service delivery across Sierra Leone.

BudgIT Sierra Leone trains CSO’s on the WASH Social Accountability Tool in Kambia.

On Friday, 19th September 2025, BudgIT Sierra Leone, in partnership with local stakeholders, held a CSO Training on the WASH Social Accountability Tool at the Kambia District Council.

This capacity-building workshop brought together Civil Society Organizations, District Health Management Teams, Budget Oversight Committees, health champions, and the media to strengthen their technical and practical knowledge on the use of the M-Water Platform, a digital tool designed for real-time tracking, feedback, and accountability in WASH service delivery at health facilities.

Through hands-on sessions, participants learned how to collect, analyze, and report data, track WASH budgets, and engage in community-driven monitoring. The training also created a network of local champions who will serve as accountability focal points across the district.

By empowering CSOs and local actors with these tools, the project is helping to bridge the gap between citizens, service providers, and policymakers, ensuring greater transparency, community ownership, and accountability in the WASH sector.

BudgIT Sierra Leone remains committed to using data, technology, and citizen engagement to strengthen governance and improve public service delivery.
