The Christian Health Association Sierra Leone (CHASL) is a Non-Governmental, not for profit.

The Christian Health Association Sierra Leone (CHASL) is a Non-Governmental, not for profit, Christian interdenominational health coordinating agency with its Secretariat based in Freetown and has been in existence since 1975. It has a network of over 43 active member health facilities spread across the entire country strategically located in deprived, hard to reach rural communities where often public health facilities are in existent serving in most case as the referral facility for the catchment population. CHASL member health facilities provides 30% of the health services to the population of Sierra Leone making it the second largest service provide in the country. These health facilities provide various services ranging from In- patient medical, outpatient, surgical, pediatric, reproductive maternal, adolescent, mental health, ophthalmic care among other across the board. CHASL has a long-standing relationship with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation as well as with other key partners including UN agencies, Cord Aid, Difam, CRS, Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC), Bread for the World. The institution contributes to the health agenda in the country complementing the MOHS/ Government effort

Strengthening Health Systems Through Peer Learning
CHASL, in partnership with the Lifeline Project (ACHAP) and the Directorate of Disease Prevention and Control, Ministry of Health, successfully held its Quarterly Review and Peer Learning Exchange Meeting for health workers.

Representatives from 10 participating health facilities reviewed performance, shared best practices, addressed data and supply chain challenges, and developed action plans to strengthen HIV and TB service delivery.

Together, we continue to promote quality improvement, strengthen health systems, and improve health outcomes for the communities we serve.

💙 Investing in Healthcare Workers Today, Saving Lives Tomorrow

With the generous support of Bread for the World, CHASL conducted a two-day capacity-building workshop to strengthen Maternal, Sexual, and Reproductive Health services in Sierra Leone.

Healthcare workers gained critical knowledge and practical skills to deliver quality, respectful, and life-saving care to women, newborns, adolescents, and families.

Together, we are reducing preventable deaths, strengthening health systems, and transforming lives.

Strengthening Communities Through Integrated HIV & TB Outreach Services
With support from ACHAP, CHASL is delivering integrated HIV and TB outreach services to underserved communities across Sierra Leone. The initiative provides health education, screening, testing, counseling, and referrals while promoting HIV prevention, PMTCT, Early Infant Diagnosis (EID), and early TB detection.

So far, 5 of 10 target communities have been reached, with 196 people educated, screened, and tested, and 50 clients referred for further care. Implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Health's HIV and TB Programmes, the outreach is reducing stigma, improving health-seeking behaviors, and expanding access to essential healthcare services. CHASL remains committed to supporting national efforts to end HIV and TB.

Strengthening Faith-Based Health Systems Through Regional Learning and Partnership
With support from DIFAEM, a CHASL delegation completed a learning exchange visit to the Christian Health Association of Liberia (CHAL) to strengthen collaboration and improve faith-based healthcare services.

The visit focused on pharmaceutical supply chain management, financial sustainability, governance, and Medical Supply Unit (MSU) operations. Key lessons will help CHASL enhance medicine availability, supply chain efficiency, accountability, and access to healthcare across Sierra Leone.

The exchange highlighted the value of regional partnerships while addressing common challenges such as supply chain disruptions, rising costs, and workforce gaps. CHASL appreciates CHAL and DIFAEM for their continued partnership and support.

Honouring a Legacy: SOUTHERN EYE CLINIC Becomes SCHANZER EYE CLINIC

Today marks a significant milestone in the advancement of eye care services under the Christian Health Association Sierra Leone (CHASL).

We are proud to announce that SOUTHERN EYE CLINIC is now the SCHANZER EYE CLINIC, in honour of our late foundress, Dr. Mary Cathy Schanzer, whose passion, dedication, and vision transformed eye care in Sierra Leone and touched countless lives.
This new identity, officially unveiled by the Deputy Minister I of Health, Prof. Dr. Dr. Charles Senesie, stands as a lasting tribute to her remarkable legacy and lifelong commitment to compassionate, quality healthcare.

The unveiling ceremony took place today, 21st June 2026, at the facility in Serabu, Bumpe Gao Chiefdom, Catholic Diocese of Bo, marking a historic moment for the community and the nation at large.
More than a name change, this transition signals a bold new chapter, one defined by renewed vision, strengthened purpose, and an even deeper commitment to excellence in delivering accessible, patient centred eye care services.

As we celebrate her life and enduring impact, we extend our sincere gratitude to her husband, Mr. Tom Lewis, whose unwavering support continues to sustain and advance the mission she so passionately championed.
Building on a strong foundation, the SCHANZER EYE CLINIC will continue to expand specialized services, enhance clinical excellence, and strengthen partnerships to improve eye health outcomes across Sierra Leone.

The Christian Health Association Sierra Leone (CHASL) successfully conducted a comprehensive training for healthcare workers on the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT), Early Infant Diagnosis (EID), Tuberculosis (TB), and Dried Blood Spot (DBS) sample collection.

This impactful training under the lifeline project, supported by the African Christian Health Association Platform (ACHAP), brought together healthcare providers to strengthen their capacity through enhanced knowledge and practical skills in HIV prevention, early infant diagnosis, TB screening, and accurate DBS collection procedures.

The training was facilitated in collaboration with the Directorate of Disease Prevention and Control under the Ministry of Health, ensuring a strong technical and coordinated approach.

Participants from eight CHASL member facilities and two Ministry of Health facilities actively engaged in presentations, interactive discussions, and hands-on practical sessions aimed at improving the quality and integration of HIV and TB services at the facility level.
This initiative reflects CHASL’s continued commitment to advancing maternal and child health, while strengthening integrated TB and HIV care systems across communities in Sierra Leone.

Induction and Oath-Taking Ceremony for Allied Health Professionals in Sierra Leone

The Ministry of Health of Sierra Leone recently held an induction and oath-taking ceremony for newly registered allied health professionals.

This significant milestone reflects the government’s continued commitment to strengthening healthcare services and promoting professionalism across the country.

The Christian Health Association Sierra Leone (CHASL) was proud to participate as a key faith-based health partner, reaffirming its role in supporting healthcare delivery and workforce development nationwide.

During the ceremony, the newly registered professionals pledged to uphold the highest standards of ethical, compassionate, and quality care.

Training Course on the Delivery of Vitamin A Supplementation, Deworming, and Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (MMS)

The Christian Health Association Sierra Leone (CHASL), in collaboration with the Healey International Relief Foundation, successfully participated in a Training Course on the Delivery of Vitamin A Supplementation, Deworming, and Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (MMS).

This important partnership continues to strengthen the capacity of frontline health workers, particularly nurses, to deliver essential nutrition and child health interventions with accuracy and confidence.

During the training, nurses enhanced their understanding of the differences among key interventions, including their composition, purpose, dosage, and timing of administration. Special emphasis was placed on the correct delivery of services for children aged 24–59 months.

Key highlights from the training included:
* Vitamin A Supplementation: Administered every six months to improve vision and boost immunity.

⁠* Deworming (Albendazole or Mebendazole): Given once or twice yearly to treat and prevent intestinal worm infections.

* ⁠* Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (MMS): Containing 15 essential vitamins and minerals, primarily used during pregnancy as a replacement for iron and folic acid supplementation, and not routinely used for children unless guided by national policy.

The training has further strengthened nurses’ capacity to deliver these life-saving interventions effectively, contributing to improved child health outcomes across communities.

Certificates were awarded to all CHASL representatives who successfully completed the course, recognizing their dedication and commitment to quality healthcare delivery.
