Today, on the 21st day of September, we celebrate the feast of St. Matthew the Evangelist.
Matthew was an obedient son of God. A profound testament to this was the moment he surrendered his life of luxury, without hesitation the very second Jesus commanded, "Follow me." Matthew himself had long exploited the poor, especially during his tax collecting days. Yet, in what seems like a random and normal day, in just a single encounter with Christ himself, he immediately severed ties with the life he was accustomed to.
βYou are the salt of the earth and light of the worldβ
When there is too much salt, food becomes unbearable. When a light burns too fiercely, it leaves souls blinded rather than guided. This timeless passage from the Gospel of Matthew emphasizes the call to live a life of intentional moderation and humble serviceβto be the gentle salt that seasons the world with Christβs love and the warm, guiding light that leads souls out of darkness without blinding them in self-righteous glory.
Echoing the words of St. Thomas Aquinasβ"It is better to illuminate than to merely shine"βwe, too, are summoned to strip away our pursuit of worldly fame, approval, and status. Our lifeβs work must be anchored in quiet yet meaningful humility, poured out purely for the salvation and dignity of all.
Like Matthew, may we be humble and obedient sons and daughters, ever striving for the goodness of Godβs kingdom. Let our hearts linger in constant readiness, waiting to utter an unhesitating 'Yes' the moment Jesus whispers to our soul: βFollow me.β
