The fifth principle of , “Safer Solvents and Auxiliaries,” states that auxiliary substances, such as solvents and separation agents, should be unnecessary whenever possible and harmless when used. 🧪

Solvents often enable chemical reactions but can also generate significant waste and pose hazards, including toxicity, flammability, and environmental persistence. Principle 5 encourages chemists to rethink these materials and ask: are they needed at all, and if so, is there a safer option?

This principle shifts focus from the end product to the entire process, encouraging safer alternatives and fewer unnecessary materials to enhance efficiency and minimize risks.
