FUKUOKA, Japan โ UP College of Arts and Letters (CAL) alumna, former UPD Department of English and Comparative Literature faculty member and 18th UP National Writers Workshop fellow Caroline Sy Hau has been named the laureate of the Academic Prize for the 36th Fukuoka Prize, as officially announced by the Fukuoka Prize Committee on May 22, 2026.
The Fukuoka Prize, established in 1990 by the Japanese city of Fukuoka and the Fukuoka City International Foundation, honors outstanding individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the preservation and creation of Asian culture.
Hau, who earned her Bachelor of Arts in English: Imaginative Writing (summa cm laude) degree from UP Diliman in 1990 and served as its university valedictorian, is a highly respected author, literary critic, and academic. The committee recognized her as a leading 21st-century Asian intellectual and a scholar of Southeast Asian studies who "crafts incisive and elegant prose grounded in deep humanism."
Currently a professor of Southeast Asian literature at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) in Kyoto University, Hau has written extensively on Philippine culture, literature, and the complexities of Chinese-Filipino identity. Her notable published works include Necessary Fictions: Philippine Literature and the Nation, 1946โ1980, and The Chinese Question: Ethnicity, Nation and Region In and Beyond the Philippines, both of which have earned critical acclaim, including multiple Philippine National Book Awards.
"Drawing on the ways people endure and live their lives, she illuminates the human capacity to shape the future, offering words of both strength and warmth in an increasingly divided world," the Fukuoka Prize Committee noted in its official citation.
Hau is part of a distinguished three-person roster of laureates for 2026. The Grand Prize was awarded to Singaporean contemporary artist HO Tzu Nyen for his visual explorations of Asian history and memory.
Meanwhile, the Arts and Culture Prize went to Thai dancer and choreographer Pichet Klunchun for his innovative work in rearticulating traditional 'khon' masked dance-drama for international contemporary stages.
The official award ceremony for the 2026 laureates is scheduled to take place on Monday, September 14, 2026. Following the ceremony, Hau will deliver a public lecture on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, which will be accessible to both local audiences and global viewers via online recordings ๐ป
