They have an app called WunderMap which is only available on apple products at the moment. It displays a map of all the private stations around and the more you zoom in the more you can see, and you can click on them for more details. If you're on Android they have another app called Weather Underground which isn't as good for viewing local stations but if you type in your location which shows your nearest station. From there you see other nearby ones. Alternatively you can view them online at their website http://www.wunderground.com/

Reports of widespread surface flooding across the region today as heavy rain affects Northland.
Oakura, Whangarei Heads, Whakapara and Kaeo have all recorded close to or over 100mm of rain since midnight last night and this has caused many rivers and streams to rise rapidly.

Rain is expected to clear overnight Saturday, and Sunday will see cloud clearing to a fine afternoon.

The heavy rain watch for Northland has been upgraded to an orange heavy rain warning this morning:

Heavy rain for northern New Zealand.

A low pressure system north of New Zealand moves southeast during Saturday and early Sunday, bringing periods of heavy rain to the northern North Island with a risk of localised downpours.

Please stay up to date with forecasts.

Heavy Rain Warning - Orange

Area: Northland

Period: 15hrs from 8am - 11pm Sat, 29 Aug
Forecast: Expect 70 to 100 mm of rain, possibly more in localised downpours. Peak rates of 15 to 25 mm/h, but possible 25 to 40 mm/hr in downpours. Low chance of upgrading to a Red Warning.

Impact: Streams and rivers may rise rapidly. Surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions possible.

Action: Clear your drains and gutters to prepare for heavy rain. Avoid low-lying areas and drive cautiously.

Heavy Rain for parts of the country and possible severe gales for central areas of New Zealand

A front over the upper South Island is moving north and becomes slow moving over the upper North Island on Friday as a low develops on the front, bringing a period of heavy rain. Severe northwest gales may affect some parts of central New Zealand today.

Warnings and Watches are in force.

Forecast: Periods of heavy rain, and amounts may approach warning criteria and possibly exceed them in localised areas if downpours occur.
Moderate chance of upgrading to a Warning.

A developing high-pressure system has moved into Northland… and it appears to be bringing some seriously heavy shielding with it.

The Ranfurly Shield is officially back in Northland!

Outlook: Shield becoming firmly established.

We are currently unsure how long this weather pattern will last, but early indications suggest Canterbury won’t be seeing the Shield again anytime soon. 😂

Looking ahead to the next 10 days and beyond, it looks like we will be seeing a long period of settled weather right through until the end of August.
Fine, clear days are on the horizon, with a frost possible on Thursday morning.
Some showers are possible on Sunday but other than that, high pressure and mostly fine days are expected, with no major rain makers likely. Westerly winds will develop over the weekend and replace the cooler southerlies we are currently experiencing, and this will help warm things up a little during the day.

This is a classic El Niño set up, with lots of high pressure and dominant westerlies. Dry in the north while a lot of rain falls on the West Coast of the South Island.

Friday 4:50pm:

After a day of considerable downpours and heavy rain across the region, another large burst of heavy rain is approaching the East Coast between Ngunguru and Cape Brett. This is tracking westward and will affect Northland from Whangarei north over the next few hours.

A heavy rain watch has been issued for Northland during Wednesday. The areas covered by this watch are very similar to the ones that received the most rain over the weekend:

A front is expected move south over the upper North Island on Wednesday, bringing periods of heavy rain to northern and eastern areas and a Watch is now in force.

People are advised to stay up to date with the latest forecast in case this Watch is upgraded to a Warning or further areas are added.

Forecast: Periods of heavy rain, amounts may approach warning criteria. Localised downpours possible. Moderate chance of upgrading to a Warning.

8:45pm Sunday:

The heavy rain watch for Northland has been lifted this evening. Widespread rain has now cleared to the east.
Monday is looking to be mostly fine, with morning fog likely and a high of 17°C.

08/08/2026

11:15am Sunday:

The cold front from the Tasman Sea has reached the West Coast of Northland. Ahead of this is an area of widespread rain, in the convergence zone where the north-west winds and south-west winds are meeting.

This rain will clear overnight Sunday and behind the cold front is an area of mostly clear air, leaving behind a mostly fine Monday for Northland.

Well, it’s been a while since we’ve had any severe weather watches or warnings in Northland and that run ends today.

A heavy rain watch has been issued for northern and eastern parts of Northland on Sunday.

A low pressure system approaching the centre of NZ from the Tasman Sea will bring a northerly winds and westerly change this weekend. A front arriving on Sunday will bring a period of heavy rain on Sunday afternoon and early evening to northern and eastern areas.

Warmer temperatures will be recorded because of the northerly and westerly wind direction, with a low of 12°C expected overnight Saturday.
