MetService Severe Thunderstorm Watch
Issued at 8:16am Fri 5 Jun 2026

Area: Northland, Auckland, Great Barrier Island, Waikato
Valid: 5 hours from 3:00pm Fri 5 Jun to 8:00pm Fri 5 Jun

A front with heavy rain and embedded thunderstorms is expected to move over the northern North Island this afternoon and evening.
The thunderstorms will be accompanied by heavy rain of 10-25mm/h, strong wind gust of 100km/h, and a low risk of a small tornado.
For Northland, Auckland (including Great Barrier Island) and Waikato, there is also a moderate risk of localised downpours of 25-40mm/h between about 3pm and 8pm today (Friday). These downpours could occur with or without thunderstorms.
Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips.
Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain.

Note: A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. People in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and monitor for possible Severe Thunderstorm Warnings.
