an open letter, to you all, from one of our recipients, Damien Clark:
I would like to turn down the scholarship to apply for running for council.
I applied for this scholarship without real thought into actually getting it, and also with the mindset of really being inspired by the initiative itself without considering properly the wider potential (very small chance) implications it would have on my life.
I am incredibly honoured to have been selected and I do not wish to dishonour anyone involved in the process of this initative at any level. I have the intention of writing a full letter of explanation out of respect for those involved.
Briefly my reasons for withdrawing;
a. I'm not sure that, strategically, this is the right move for me at this stage in my life. I am getting married at the start of next year and I feel that I could make a better oppurtunity of such a role at a different stage of life.
b. This being said I believe that this amazing oppurtunity could be better utilised by someone who can give this their all and follow through with all their mind and heart.
I am still incredibly passionate about my civic responsibilities and interested in learning more about the process and where council fits in the community and how it all works so I would like to participate in the process as it develops and assist the initiative to ensure it continues and grows towards the next local election as well.
Thank you again for this amazing opportunity,
Damien Clark
