TE WHARE E TŪ NEI
Kaitito: Akamiria Rose

DID YOU KNOW?

“Te Whare e Tū Nei”, composed by Akamiria Rose, carries a special piece of Te Tai Tokerau kapa haka history.

At the 1976 regional competition, only two teams took the stage - a senior rōpū and Te Kura o Te Kamo (Kamo High School) The committee at the time, led by Uncle Hec and Aunty Hilda, allowed both teams to perform so that Te Tai Tokerau could send a representative to the Polynesian Festival in 1977.

Te Kura o Te Kamo earned that place and, because they were a school team, brought in parents and other adults to form the rōpū that represented our rohe becoming the first high school team to achieve such a feat.

Almost 50 years later, our iwi stood together and performed this waiata once again at Koroneihana.

He taonga tuku iho.
