💰❓💸 https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/1HJC9hiege 💰❓💸
We'd love you to share your feedback on our weekly quiz, if there have been any facts you have found surprising or even to boast that you got a perfect score! 🙂💯

Last week the question many people struggled with was the one around buying a product and then changing your mind, and what the consumer guarantees act requires retailers to do in this situation. The answer was nothing - There is nothing in the consumer guarantees act that compels retailers to do anything in this situation. While it is true that there is nothing in law that compels retailers to take product back if you simply change your mind, most retailers will take the item back providing it is in its original packaging and it's sellable. Individual retailers may have a stated policy on this, either providing a refund or store credit or exchanging the item for a different item, to maintain goodwill.

This week we were invited to attend our local CAB volunteers learning meeting, to share about our service and the mahi that we do.

It was a great opportunity to provide an insight to their wonderful team of volunteers, of the varied scope that our Financial Mentors can support with. We had a great discussion on the recent trends that both organisations are seeing within the community as a result of the current cost of living and the financial strain that many households are feeling.

We look forward to continuing to work alongside the CAB team to better support the Matamata community and thank the team for the opportunity to share about our service.

We'd love you to have a try! Maybe challenge your workmate or partner to see who's more money savvy!

It has been great to see the responses and the learning that is coming as a result from these over the past few weeks. We thought we would share which questions people were the most unsure about - and some information behind the answers - to give further opportunity to grow everyone's understanding!

❓Last week a few people were a little confused with the question about the cooling off period under the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act question. The correct answer if the disclosure documents are handled to you is 5 days. However if the documents are sent electronically it is 7 days and if mailed it is 9 days.

❓The other question that some struggled with was the question around the approximate total cost of the car purchased 5 years ago for $22,000 with a $2,000 deposit paid and monthly repayments of $475.80. To work this out take the monthly repayment of $475.80 x 60 months plus the $2,000 deposit and this comes to $30,548 so $30,500 was the correct answer.

If you have missed any of our previous quizzes - it's not too late - links for these are loaded on our website for you to access. https://matamatabudget.co.nz/money-quiz/

Last week we had the pleasure of attending the monthly meeting of the Matamata Inner Wheel group and presenting to them how our service works to support the community.

It was lovely to see such an active and enthusiastic group - and to get a glimpse into how they support the community with their activities and fundraising.

We would also like to thank the group for their kind and generous donation that they gave to our service earlier this month. We appreciate the value that you see in the mahi that we do.

Midweek Money Tip:
Protecting yourself against scams

To protect yourself from scams, never share passwords or bank details. Verify unsolicited callers and research companies via the NZ Companies Register at https://companies-register.companiesoffice.govt.nz/
Report scams immediately!

Don’t be rushed or pressured into anything, slow down, take your time, be calm, ask questions, consult with friends or family, or check with a trusted professional and remember if a so-called offer sounds too good to be true, then it more than likely will be some type of scam.

Be suspicious of any contact you weren’t expecting. Taking time to consider an offer or think about a message could be the difference between being caught in a scam and avoiding it. Don’t open any email attachments or click on any redirection links included in emails, txt messages, etc.

For more on how to protect yourself and how to report scams you can read the full post on our website:
https://matamatabudget.co.nz/scams/

If you suspect that you have been caught up in a scam and are unsure how to access help - we are happy to talk through the situation with you and help you navigate getting support.
