Four(ish) weeks out, Team!!
Now is a good time to timely remind us all to give our steed of choice a careful once-over, to ensure everyone gets to enjoy the event to it's max.
We carry out a basic Safety Check on all bikes, riding gear & helmets, (more on that later), but it is up to individual riders to ensure their bikes are fit for purpose, both for themselves and others.
It is worth keeping in mind that Cliffhanger is run on a public, bumpy, amazing road, which can put stresses on the bike and gear that a circuit doesn't.
To help you all prep for the event this year, here's a list of the main things that we will be checking.
Brake / Clutch levers - secure, held on by fit-for-purpose bolts/nuts
(we've seen it all, incl cable ties used to secure levers).
Throttle - rotates freely, snaps back to closed position
Tyres - good condition, good tread.
Suggestions: much like a trackday, Cliffhanger isn't the place to "finish off" a set of tyres. Bring good rubber. The more recent, the better.
If using slicks, we strongly strongly recommend Cliffhanger isn't your first time "learning" slicks, and we insist that tyre-warmers are used - unless running Metzler TrackDay slicks or similar.
(as mentioned above, we've seen it all)
Brake pads - to a WoF standard
Forks - no oil leaks
Footrests & levers - secure, (as above).
Chain & sprockets - good condition, factory slack/sag, doesn't pull off the rear of the rear sprocket.
Exhaust & brackets - secure
HELMETS
We will also be checking over your riding gear, especially helmets.
Please spend some time looking under your helmet's padding to find the manufacture date; we spend/waste an inordinate amount of time trying to find these little labels.
This year we will be forced to move on to the next bike & rider, and leave you to return later on with the helmet, in order to then be 'signed off'.
We hope this all helps.
Get busy tinkering!
We certainly are!
