Correction: For those of you interested in the MDC meeting on June 27 and are able to spare a bit of time and ignore the jargon, this is an interesting presentation on the Ratepayer Satisfaction Survey. Does anything surprise you?

“The public must decide”. That’s refreshing. Can we hope for that?

SW and Carterton Councils are also being proactive. Are we being shortchanged with just getting a survey with very little information upon which to base our answers?

AMALGAMATION

In the past week or so members of the Tararua District Council and their senior managers have been to EVERY community within the Tararua District to gauge local feelings about amalgamation.

Top marks to Tararua District Council for showing how to do this.

Online surveys are all very well, but they only ever reach a small proportion of residents.

Masterton District Council - you need to do the same. We have an excellent hall and lounge here in Tinui, and good meeting facilities at Castlepoint and Riversdale Beach. All these community groups need separate meetings as their needs are quite different.

Further to our post earlier this week here is a WTA article exploring the recent 2026 Satisfaction Survey further.
Are the comments from the CE and Mayor legitimate or spin? What is your view?

Masterton council’s reputation in a resident’s survey scored 39% with the report noting the result was “now in the ‘poor’ range”.

The latest Masterton District Council Residents’ Survey sends a very clear message from our community.
While there have been some improvements in core services like roads, recycling and rubbish collection, overall satisfaction with Council remains low at just 40%.
Most importantly, "Value for Money" remains the NUMBER ONE issue for residents — and only 40% of people believe they are getting good value from their rates.
Residents’ biggest concerns were:
• Rates being too high and unaffordable
• Poor financial management and wasteful spending
• A need to focus on core services and infrastructure
• A lack of transparency and accountability
• Not listening to ratepayers and residents.
Trust in Council has dropped sharply to just 32%, while satisfaction with the Mayor and Councillors has fallen significantly from 50% to 36%.
The survey also shows:
• Overall reputation has now fallen into the “poor” range
• Financial management satisfaction sits at only 28%
• Rural residents consistently report lower satisfaction levels than urban residents
• Roads and infrastructure are improving, but still remain a major concern.
These results reinforce exactly what many ratepayers have been saying for years: Council must get back to basics, spend ratepayer money more carefully, improve transparency, and genuinely listen to the community.
The Masterton Ratepayers and Residents Association will continue advocating for:
✔ Financial responsibility
✔ Stronger accountability
✔ Better value for rates
✔ Focus on core infrastructure and services
✔ Respect for both urban and rural voices.
Thank you to everyone who continues to speak up for our community.
