The Biome Trust's latest newsletter features our own Rob McGowan and focuses on the magnificent kauri.
Take a look - and also check out the rest of their website which has a wealth of interesting information.

Twenty-two years ago, Pā McGowan of Tīwaiwaka pressed kauri seeds into the ground. Today he gathers their seed to grow hundreds more seedlings - a living lesson in patience, guardianship, and the long view that sustains us all.

Perpetual Forestry Project

This is an uplifting video from Environment Canterbury (ECAN) and MPI about the Perpetual Forestry Project - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhlVAs9Izgo

This project is a native biodiversity initiative launched by ECAN that protects and restores indigenous forest corridors within commercial forestry blocks. ECAN manages 3000 ha of forestry, and within the plantations are some very scattered native trees – precious remnants of native forests hanging on in the Canterbury Plains, which have lost more than 99% of native vegetation since human colonisation.

This video highlights some of the work being done in the Perpetual Forestry Project to protect what remains, and to establish native forests for the future. The project uses commercial plantations to provide shelter for establishing native plants – planting plus encouraging natural regeneration - to create biodiversity corridors particularly along waterways.

We’re Hiring! 🌳

Our wonderful Admin Manager is unfortunately moving on, which means we are looking for a new superstar to join Tāne’s Tree Trust to keep us organised and on track.

Sustainable and selective tōtara harvesting for NZ-made furniture

Following a karakia by Ngāti Rehia kaumatua, Kipa Munro, and accompanied by Mariao Hohaia, Executive Manager of Tapuaetahi Incorporation, another tōtara harvest took place on one of their Northland farms. This is part of a sustainable supply chain project – supplying timber from regenerated tōtara forests to Innate Furniture Ltd. – a NZ-based, NZ-made furniture company. An MPI approved sustainable forest management plan allows for such sustainable harvesting. Paul Quinlan selected the trees according to close-to-nature continuous cover forestry principles. And contractor Michael Harrison and crew expertly extracted a total of 18 trees.

Here are some photos of the operation…
