Even if you, or someone in your whānau has asthma, advice changes over time and continues to evolve. Working with the NZ Asthma Guidelines, we provide you with the most up to date information, to make sure you feel confident supporting your child's asthma care. Always remember to take your inhalers with your even if it's just for one night up the road with friends or whānau.

We recommend replacing your spacer every 6-12 months if you are using it regularly. Always check it for cracks, cloudiness, damage or if the valve isnt working properly. Replace it if you notice any problems.

From September 1st 2026, ALL children from 6 months old until their 5th birthday are eligible for a free flu vaccine.
The 2026 influenza season has seen high rates of influenza-related hospitalisations among children under five years, who are at greater risk of severe illness than other age groups.

For children with asthma, protection from flu is especially important as respiratory infections can trigger asthma symptoms and flare-ups.
Book your vaccine with Pharmacies, Medical Centres or Community Health Care Providers.

Sitting or standing is the best position for children taking their inhalers. Chin up so the spacer is horizontal.

Asthma symptoms can flare when preventer inhaler doses are missed. It's important to know how many doses are in the inhaler, and when it's going to be empty.
When you start a NEW inhaler write the finish date on the canister, or in your calendar on your phone with an alarm notifying you a few days in advance, or where ever you find helpful.

Check your childs inhaler so you know the strength of the medicine and how many doses are in the canister before it is empty.

No matter what age you are, everyone who uses a 'PUFFER' type inhaler needs a spacer. 70% more medication reaches your lungs when using a spacer than if you puff the inhaler straight into your mouth.
Remember technique for your child is - Shake the inhaler, 1 puff and 6 good breaths.

The blue/grey Salbutamol is a RELIEVER inhaler that is used when your child has symptoms like a cough, wheeze or shortness of breath. If your child is needing this inhaler MORE than twice a week WHEN THEY ARE WELL we recommend your child has a review with either us or their GP. What's the reason they are needing this inhaler when they are well?
