Asthma

Waikato – who we are, what we do

Our Vision: Living free from asthma

Our Mission: To free people from asthma through expert education and advocacy to live a life full of possibilities

We explain:

· What asthma actually is
· What medicines there are and what they do
· What a spacer is
· What different devices there are
· What triggers are
· What other things might be impacting asthma

We explain the WHY of all these things because if people know the WHY they’re more likely to comply. We ensure people are on:
· The right medicine
· The right dose
· The right device

Our education ensures that they and their whānau know how to:
· Take it in the right way
· At the right time

We give people
· Our time
· Access to our expertise
· Robust follow up
· An open door policy for reaching out
· Holistic care
· A warm, welcoming environment for the whole whānau

Getting out and about providing Asthma Education helping and supporting our children, to keep them well controlled for winter. What town in the Waikato did I visit?

When using the E CHAMBER spacer there is no need to put any extra inhaler puffs into the spacer before your child uses it, either when it is brand new from the packet, after you have washed it, or ever!
This is an anti static spacer. More than 1 puff of medication in the spacer at a time means the medicine clumps together, falls to the bottom of the spacer and your child does not breath any of the medication in.

Often during Summer children are much healthier having fewer asthma symptoms, and PREVENTER inhaler doses are often forgotten. Now is time to step the preventer inhaler back up to a morning and night dose. This provides better control of asthma symptoms. Maybe you have noticed a cough, wheeze or shortness of breath start to creep back in.....

Celebrating International Nurse Day today. Held on the anniversary of Florence Nightingales birth, it's a day to celebrate nurses around the world and the care they provide. This years theme 'Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives'. These nurses are part of the gorgeous team starting their afternoon shift today. We have been running Asthma information sessions to the teams starting last week during 'Asthma Awareness' week.

Asthma awareness week - raising awareness to help our kids in the Waikato (and the rest of NZ) breathe better every day.

It’s Asthma Awareness Week (4–8 May)! We're proud to support our friends at [ OR ] as they share real stories from Kiwis living with and managing asthma 💙

This year’s theme is Every Breath. Every Story.
In their new awareness video, Mea Motu shares her powerful personal journey with asthma — the challenges, the discipline, and the resilience it takes to manage the condition.

Did you know:
🫁 1 in 8 people in NZ have asthma or a respiratory condition
🧒 Children are 3x more likely to be hospitalised
⏱️ An asthma attack happens every 2.5 minutes
❗ There are 96 preventable deaths each year

By sharing real stories, we can help raise awareness, reduce stigma, and encourage people to seek support.

We had a great day in Thames speaking with the nurses at Thames hospital. We also booked in asthma upskilling sessions for staff at schools & preschools. We did introductions at medical centres and pharmacies and provided them with 'Tips for managing asthma' brochures to be given to whānau when they collect their asthma meds.

We had a lovely day out at the Rauawaawa Kaumātua Housing and Houora Expo 2026. It is always great chatting with the kaumātua & staff, helping with their asthma questions. The warm up to start the day was fun too.
