Kitten Update 🐾
This little lot headed off to the vets this evening to investigate their respiratory symptoms and diarrhoea, as well as for a general health check.
Sadly, as we suspected, these new kids have feline calicivirus, one of our least favourite illnesses to see in cats and kittens coming into care. Calicivirus is a highly contagious virus that affects the respiratory system and can cause painful ulcers on the tongue, gums, mouth, throat and even the nose. It can also cause sneezing, nasal discharge, conjunctivitis, fever and lethargy, just to name a few symptoms.
Like the flu, there is no cure for the virus itself, so supportive care is the key to helping them recover. On top of that, these little poppets have a nasty case of diarrhoea, so keeping them well hydrated and replacing the fluids they're losing is a constant battle.
Their treatment plan includes:
🐾 Extra wet food meals – to boost hydration.
🐾 FortiFlora probiotics – to support gut health and help with diarrhoea.
🐾 Hydro Care supplement – for additional hydration.
🐾 Antibiotics – to treat or prevent any secondary bacterial infections.
🐾 Panacur — To rule out Giardia
It's also incredibly important to provide a clean environment, keep them warm and dry, and ensure they have good ventilation while they recover.
