Waikato Tainui This is the official page for Waikato-Tainui, the tribal organisation representing the interests of Waikato iwi, hapuu, marae and tangata.

The iwi has a membership of approximately 65,000 descendants based throughout Aotearoa and overseas. As a tribal entity we aim to empower our people by providing a range of programmes and opportunities including grants and scholarships, education and health programmes, employment and training, cultural initiatives and marae development assistance. Last weekend, 9 tribal members completed our Ruku Kaimoana programme, building confidence and safety knowledge to help provide kaimoana for their marae, whaanau and kaupapa such as Poukai.

Ruku Kaimoana is a kaupapa focused programme on protecting our traditional practices, strengthening succession at marae level, and supporting our whaanau to return home safely.

He taonga tuku iho, he oranga whaanau.

Waikato-Tainui has welcomed today’s announcement from the Minister of Health and the University of Waikato confirming that four regions across the Tainui waka rohe have been identified as clinical placement locations for the New Zealand Graduate School of Medicine (NZGSM).

North Waikato, Hauraki/Thames-Coromandel, South Waikato, and Waipa/King Country will each host Community Clinical Learning Centres as part of the NZGSM’s distributed clinical placement network, with Waikato Hospital serving as the anchor hospital for Year 2 hospital-based placements.

Te Reo Taapoopokotea Graduation 🎓🎉
On 28 May, we came together to celebrate our kaumaatua who recently graduated from Te Reo Taapoopokotea.

Since its inception in early 2021, this kaupapa has supported kaumaatua to grow and strengthen their knowledge and skills in tikanga and te reo Maaori through waiata, karanga, whaikoorero, karakia and more.

It was a beautiful moment to acknowledge their commitment, their learning journey, and the taonga they continue to carry for our whaanau, marae and iwi.

Environment Court Decision Welcomed

The Environment Court has issued its long-awaited decision in relation to Waikato Regional Council’s Plan Change 1 (PC1), which represents the first stage in a comprehensive long-term strategy to restore and protect the health and wellbeing of the Waikato River.

The Court’s decision is welcomed by the iwi of Waikato. Te Arataura Chair Tukoroirangi Morgan says the Court’s decision is a timely reminder of the enduring importance of the Waikato River Settlement and the central role of Te Ture Whaimana o Te Awa o Waikato (the Vision and Strategy for the Waikato River) as the primary direction-setting instrument for the Waikato River and activities within its catchment.

River Iwi Welcome Landmark Decision as a Critical Step in Restoring the Waikato and Waipaa Rivers.

River Iwi, Ngaati Tuuwharetoa, Waikato, Maniapoto, Raukawa, and Te Arawa River Iwi — welcome the release of the Environment Court’s final decision on Plan Change 1 (PC1), describing it as a significant
and long-awaited milestone in the intergenerational restoration and protection of the Waikato and Waipaa River catchments.

The decision ends a process spanning almost a decade and represents a critical step in giving practical and enforceable effect to Te Ture Whaimana o Te Awa o Waikato, the Vision and Strategy for the Waikato River.
