Surf City Rod And Custom Club

Surf City Rod And Custom Club The Surf City Rod and Custom Club was incorporated on 23rd December 1970. Unfortunately there are no known records of when that group was formed.

Sadly early club minutes weren't dated so it unclear when the first meeting had been held. There had been an earlier group called Surf City Rodders who had interestingly held the same PO Box number and used the same picture in their logo. Early club activities were centered around club meetings, car trails, displays, slide evenings etc. along with a lot of fundraising which included bottle drives

, house painting and raffles. The club endured a small hiccup when at the meeting in January 1973, it was recorded that "It appears there are numerous rods in the district but there is no interest in the club. It was put to the vote whether the club winds up or goes int recess. It was decided by a larger majority that it go into recess until 8th July 1973". However by May meetings were being held again, with club assets and bank accounts still intact, and a keen interest to find a permanent Club rooms

Meetings were held regularly at the local Scout hall, and a number of larger events were held including streetkhanas, shows in 1977 and 1980, and runs beginning in 1978 and eventually becoming bi-annual events, which are still held to this day. An ex ministry of works relocatable building was purchased by tender in February 1979, and the search began for suitable land. Eventually, around October 1980 a lease was entered into with the local speedway club and settled there for a few years. After a huge amount of work at regular working bees, these clubrooms were sold for removal and the club went back to holding meetings in borrowed premises, this time the polytec, for a few years while they concentrated on strengthening the bank balance. A lease became available on Council land in the industrial subdivision amongst other clubs, so this was duly signed up, and the process of building their own clubrooms began. These new clubrooms were build almost entirely by their own members, from the initial design through to final painting. It is interesting to note that at a club meeting it was arranged to meet the following weekend to set out the profiles for the floor, and the minutes record that the very next monthly meeting was held in the new clubrooms-no windows, and an extension lead from the club next door, but they were in their new home. And they're still there today, freehold, and meeting socially twice a week and once a month for meetings. The club was honored to have the clubrooms officially opened by the then president of NZHRA and all round good guy, the Rt.Honorable Tony Johnson.
