WEDNESDAY WORD
THE NAME THAT CHANGES OUR POSTURE
We sing:
“What a beautiful name it is.”
“What a powerful name it is.”
“Jesus, be the name.”
But what are we actually saying?
The name Jesus means “Yahweh saves.”
So when we say Jesus, we're not simply saying a beautiful word.
We're naming the One who saves.
“You are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.”
— Matthew 1:21
And Scripture tells us that God gave Jesus “the name that is above every name.”
— Philippians 2:9
That's why we sing about His name being beautiful.
Because in Jesus we see the character of God — His love, mercy, grace and salvation.
That's why we call His name powerful.
Because our confidence isn't in the power of the word itself.
Our confidence is in the Person behind the name.
Jesus.
And that's why “Jesus, be the name” is more than a lyric.
It can become a posture:
Jesus, be the name we lift up.
Jesus, be the name at the centre.
Jesus, be the name that shapes how we live.
And this brings us back to the word God gave in 2024.
The word wasn't simply about doing more.
It was a call to position.
To recognise what happens when Christ is not at the centre.
When we carry things apart from Him.
When warfare comes and we respond through our own strength.
When activity replaces surrender.
When works become disconnected from relationship.
“Be My standard bearers.”
A standard bearer doesn't create the standard.
They carry it.
And the standard we carry is Christ.
This is where Eastgate becomes more than a name.
The East Gate of Jerusalem was a place associated with looking toward the presence and glory of God. Ezekiel's vision describes the glory of the Lord coming through the east gate, and later describes the east gate as a place where the people worshipped.
And perhaps that gives us a picture for what Eastgate Unplugged is inviting us into:
A turning.
Away from the noise.
Away from striving.
Away from the things competing for our attention.
And toward Jesus.
Not simply knowing about Him.
But knowing who He is.
Because when we know who He is, it begins to change how we see ourselves.
How we pray.
How we worship.
How we carry what God has entrusted to us.
How we respond when warfare comes.
How we serve.
How we surrender.
Jesus becomes the centre again.
And maybe that's why those words we sing matter so much:
What a beautiful name.
What a powerful name.
Jesus, be the name.
Not just something we sing.
Something we live from.
