Feeding the world's burgeoning population is shaping up to be one of the greatest challenges facing mankind. Coupled with this is increasing scientific evidence that our traditional food production methods are causing havoc on our environment and ecosystems. It has to be possible to produce healthy nutritious food for all of the world's population - without destroying our environment. Berrysmith Foundation's aim is to lead the world in the development of sustainable systems that make growing healthy, nutritious food available for virtually everyone - regardless of land availability, climate, soil conditions, location, natural resources or large capital investment. We believe that New Zealand has the potential to become a global pioneer in the development of such systems, and in doing so, further enhance our international reputation as the premier food producer globally.

Is local food always better for the environment?

Food miles are only one part of a food product’s environmental footprint. How food is grown, the resources used in production, seasonal availability and food waste all influence its overall impact.

Understanding the full journey from farm to plate helps put sustainable food choices into perspective and highlights the importance of efficient, responsible food production. https://bit.ly/4jbXOEZ

Almost a third of global greenhouse gas emissions are connected to food production. Does where you buy your fruit and vegetables still matter?

🌱 Healthy food production starts beneath the surface.

Healthy soils support stronger crops, better use of water and nutrients, and more resilient agricultural systems. Understanding what happens below ground is an important part of developing more sustainable ways to grow the food we depend on.

The future of food depends on looking at the whole system — from the soil and roots to the crops and the people they feed.

🌱 Scientists are exploring deeper-rooted soybeans as a way to make one of the world’s major food crops more resilient to drought.

Researchers at the Salk Institute are testing soybean plants with deeper root systems, looking at whether they can better withstand extreme conditions while also storing more carbon underground. The field trials are examining both crop performance and environmental benefits.

It’s an interesting example of food production adapting at the crop level, with the potential to grow food more resiliently while making better use of the soil beneath it 👉 https://bit.ly/46QAVj7

For years, scientists have explored ways to remove carbon from the atmosphere, including through direct air capture, changes to ocean chemistry so seawater can absorb more carbon and reforestation.

👣🍃 The footprint of our food reaches far beyond the plate.

How food is produced affects the land, water and natural resources we all depend on. Building more sustainable food systems means looking carefully at that footprint and finding practical ways to reduce it while continuing to nourish people.

That thinking sits at the heart of the BerrySmith Foundation: creating a healthier world for our people and our planet through better, more sustainable approaches to food production.

🌾 Perennial grains could offer farmers another way to produce food in increasingly difficult conditions.

AP reports on farmers experimenting with crops such as Kernza, a perennial grain with deep roots that can help withstand drought, reduce soil erosion and remain in the ground for several years between plantings. Researchers and growers are still working through challenges including yields and market demand, but the potential is significant.

It’s an interesting example of sustainable food production being developed from the ground up — adapting the crops themselves while improving how soil and resources are managed 👉 https://bit.ly/4xb3MJp

A handful of U.S. farmers are looking at a new solution to extreme weather. Perennial grains may better withstand extreme drought like the one earlier this year that devastated some wheat farmers in Kansas.

🌱 Bhutan has brought the future of food systems to the global table.

Its first Conscious Food Systems Summit gathered participants from more than 60 countries to explore how regenerative agriculture, biodiversity and resilient food production can help address growing pressures on global food supplies.

The discussions reflect an increasingly important shift towards food systems that protect the natural resources they depend on while remaining capable of feeding communities in a changing world 👉 https://bit.ly/4coAbol

☕ Local food is taking centre stage in Ghana.

The Ghana Food Movement is reconnecting people with locally grown ingredients such as moringa and tigernuts, while bringing farmers, chefs and communities together around a more resilient food culture.

It’s an inspiring example of how embracing diverse, locally suited foods can support growers, strengthen food systems and make better use of what can be produced close to home 👉 https://bit.ly/3SqPOF7

🌱 Natural farming is helping reshape food production in southern India.

Farmers in Andhra Pradesh are using natural farming methods designed to improve soil health, reduce dependence on synthetic inputs and build greater resilience into the way food is grown.

It’s a practical example of sustainable food production happening at scale, with healthier soils and smarter use of natural resources at the heart of the approach 👉 https://bit.ly/4znnDrn

Natural farming in India is boosting crop yields, restoring soil health and biodiversity, and improving livelihoods for millions of small-scale farmers.

🌱 Healthy food begins with healthy soil.

The soil beneath our feet is the foundation of our food system, supporting the crops that nourish people every day. Looking after it isn't just good farming—it's essential for long-term food security and environmental health.

🌾 The latest FAO Food Price Index shows global food prices rising again, driven by increases across several major food categories.

Higher prices place added pressure on households and highlight the need for food systems that are resilient, efficient and able to withstand disruption. Sustainable production, stronger supply chains and better use of resources all play a role in keeping nutritious food available and affordable. https://bit.ly/4xm05kG

The world is on the verge of another bout of food inflation as wars in Iran and Ukraine along with El Nino create a perfect storm of higher costs and lower crop yields, the chief economist of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization said.
