Community Connect - Pūmanawa Āwhina Supporting Community

Community Connect - Pūmanawa Āwhina Supporting Community Community Connect aims to engage and empower communities through social sport, recreational activity, culture and togetherness.

We encourage social growth through regular co-designed programmes with community, for community. Pūmanawa Āwhina | Supporting Community

Community Connect is a programme that works with communities using recreation and activity as a vehicle for community and social development outcomes, delivering human and social capital outcomes to partners across government and locally. From our own and our pa

rtners perspective, it is a proven approach that engages with non-participants in priority communities, providing regular opportunities to participate in multiple sport and activities. Community Connect was born as a pilot five years ago through a collaboration between NZ Police and Touch NZ. It has grown and evolved through a number of iterations, with the support of a range of cross-government and community partners. Community Connect projects are being delivered across 7 priority communities, based on a locally-led delivery approach designed to meet the specific needs of identified communities. A day dedicated to sport, connection and giving tamariki the opportunity to get active, try something new and have fun 💛

More than 200 tamariki from schools across South Auckland joined us for an awesome day of touch, league, netball, wheelchair league and other activities. It was incredible to see so many young people getting involved, backing themselves and having a go ✨

To keep the momentum going, each school received Pass It Forward balls so tamariki can take their new skills and confidence back to school, continue playing, and encourage others to get involved. A huge thank you to our friends at Silver Fern Sport and Rebel Sport NZ for helping make this possible 🏉💙

Ngā mihi to the Warriors Community Foundation Stars Netball, our schools, kaiako and everyone who helped bring this kaupapa to life.

Together, we're creating opportunities for tamariki to connect, grow in confidence and experience the joy of sport 🙌

Sport has the power to change lives 💙

Yesterday, PA proudly hosted the Hon. Mark Mitchell, Minister of Sport & Rec, at Manurewa to showcase how sport and recreation can help reduce child and youth offending (RCYO) and create positive pathways for our rangatahi. PA, using IPIR (Igniting Potential in Rangatahi), is one of the first organisations to be part of the first wave of the Sport NZ run RCYO project.

Thanks to our amazing partners and supporters who stand alongside this kaupapa: Fanau Latu NZ Local Board New Zealand and Zealand Police.

Based in Takānini, South Auckland, Wana is doing incredible mahi supporting tāne across Aotearoa with lived experiences of violence. Through their kaupapa, Wana is helping reconnect tāne, strengthen whānau, and create pathways of healing, growth, and transformation.
We are honoured that sport can be used as a vehicle to support this amazing kaupapa, bringing people together, creating connection, and helping empower positive change within our communities.
