Since 1980, Odyssey has supported thousands of New Zealanders whose lives are affected by alcohol, drug or other addiction challenges.

* * * We offer services for adults, young people and whāanau in a range of settings.

* * * W

e wholeheartedly believe that everyone in Aotearoa New Zealand should have the opportunity to live life to the fullest and feel hopeful about their future. We want you to have options to access the support you need in ways that work for you. We recognise that recovery is a journey and that you may need different supports at different times in your life.

* * * Wherever or whenever you may access our services – at our community hubs, staying with us, or somewhere else – you will find a supportive environment to learn new skills and work towards new life goals, alongside other people who are experiencing similar challenges.

* * * Guided and supported by trained peers and practitioners, you will have the time and space to think about what you want from life and how to get there.

* * * Here on Facebook, we'll share news about our work, as well as information and resources that support recovery and wellbeing. We look forward to connecting with you too.

* * * As in all our spaces, our conversations and work are guided by our pillars (or values) - Trust | Honesty | Responsibility | Concern | Love. We encourage everyone to consider these when sharing views here.

* * * This page is moderated from 9am to 4pm each weekday. Outside of these hours, if you need support or wish to get in touch, please visit our website, email or call us as detailed below. Thank you for dropping by.

What does hope look like?

Sometimes it’s found in the words and images on a wall.

Our Waikato office in the heart of Hamilton reflects the care, pride and thoughtfulness of the people who work there. From bilingual artwork and whakataukī to te reo Māori, Waikato-Tainui history and uplifting messages, every detail helps create an environment of connection, hope and belonging. And the little things matter too, like the basket of fresh fruit and basketball hoop in reception that help people feel welcome, relaxed and at home.

At Odyssey, recovery is about more than the services we provide. It’s also about creating spaces where rangatahi, whānau and communities feel encouraged, valued and inspired.

Last week our Vaiola programme celebrated Cook Islands Language Week by exploring the rich language, culture and traditions of the Cook Islands.

Vaiola is Odyssey's monthly Pacific gathering, bringing people together to celebrate Pacific cultures, strengthen connections, and support wellbeing through community and belonging.

Tāngata whai ora enjoyed a fun Cook Islands quiz before taking part in a meaningful tivaevae-inspired activity. Together, we reflected on how a tivaevae represents much more than a beautiful quilt, it tells stories of identity, language, resilience, relationships and belonging. It was a reminder that, like language and culture, every person's experiences shape who they are and support their recovery journey.

A special highlight was a beautiful poem shared by one of our tāngata whai ora, celebrating identity, culture and hope. It was also wonderful to welcome a few tamariki, whose laughter added even more joy to the day.

As we celebrate Cook Islands Language Week, we're reminded of the importance of honouring language, culture and connection in creating safe, inclusive spaces where people can thrive.

At Odyssey, recovery isn’t just about the support people receive, it’s also about having the opportunity to contribute, make decisions, take action, and have a sense of belonging. At Te Wairua, our Northland and Auckland residential services for people seeking support with mental health and addiction issues, tāngata whai ora are encouraged to help shape the place they call home.

Through the Therapeutic Community model, tāngata whai ora are encouraged to actively participate in shaping their environment and daily life. Earlier this year, residents at Te Wairua Counties Manukau transformed an unused space into a volleyball court. Recently some of the team have been busy growing winter vegetables for the house and are now planting spring crops, including lettuces and strawberries. Artwork created by the parent of one tangata whai ora is displayed in the living room.

"It's their home, we don't live here. We empower them as much as possible to make it their own, and we're here to support them with that," says the facility's Clinical Manager.

The approach is an important part of the Therapeutic Community model, where everyone has a role to play and ideas are welcomed. It’s inspiring to see how shared spaces, responsibility and purpose help create a welcoming place for recovery.
