Talofa lava,

Today we proudly begin Vaiaso o Le Gagana Sāmoa, Samoan Language Week 2026.

At Henderson Budget Services, we celebrate the cultures, languages, and traditions that make our communities stronger.

A special thank you to our lovely mentors Tia and Eva for their beautiful introduction and uplifting song, helping us welcome this special week with warmth, pride, and joy.

This year's theme is “‘E afua mai i mauga tetele manuia o le ‘nu’u” which translates to “From the high mountains are the blessings of the village.”

This powerful message reminds us that the wellbeing and success of our communities come from our people, our heritage, and the strong connections we build together. Just as a village supports its people, we are proud to stand alongside our clients and community, supporting one another through life's challenges and successes.

We encourage everyone to take the opportunity this week to learn a new Samoan phrase, celebrate the language, and honour the rich culture and contributions of the Samoan community.

Manuia le Vaiaso o le Gagana Sāmoa.

Two inspiring days at the Te Ara Ahunga Ora Retirement Commission National Strategy for Financial Capability Conference alongside our amazing Henderson Budget Services team and board members.

What stood out was the strong sense of collaboration across the sector. Organisation's, community leaders, financial mentors, banks, fintechs, and advocates all focused on the same goal of building a financially stronger and more inclusive Aotearoa New Zealand.

There were powerful conversations around digital identity, financial inclusion, KiwiSaver, women’s financial wellbeing, and the growing pressures facing whānau across our communities. It was encouraging to hear practical ideas, innovative solutions, and honest discussions about the structural changes still needed.

One of the most hopeful themes was the future generation. The move toward compulsory financial education in schools from 2027 feels like a real step forward. Financial capability is about more than money. It is about confidence, access, opportunity, and ensuring people are not left behind.

A BIG takeaway for us was the reminder that meaningful impact happens through connection and collective effort. Grateful to everyone who shared their insights, experiences, and passion over the last two days.

Proud to be part of the mahi happening across this sector and excited for what comes next.

Last week we celebrated Youth Week at Massey Matters it was a fantastic night we had connecting with young people and local services!

We had a table set up alongside Massey Matters Te Puna Manawa Zeal West Auckland Te Wānanga o Aotearoa Maka Leadership Programme Visionwest Community Trust Ministry of Social Development NZ supporting rangatahi to learn about the different services available to them while also having some fun along the way.

It was great to see young people using the Massey Matters Youth Passport, which encouraged them to visit each service, have conversations, and collect stamps from every table. Once completed, it went into a prize draw with many prizes up for grabs.

At our table we had a big lolly jar 'SWEET STAKES' guessing competition (closest guess took the whole jar home!), along with information booklets covering important topics like budgeting, spending habits, savings and everyday money decisions. We also included a few interactive activities such as a budget game, a “fix Tim’s budget” challenge where rangatahi had to balance an already set budget, and a spending habits sheet that got people thinking about their weekly choices which I think will be on many fridges this week!

One highlight was a conversation with a lady who was surprised at how much her monthly impulse shopping/subscriptions added up to. We also worked together to create a 6-month holiday budget plan, which opened up some really good discussions around goals and saving and sacrificing a few WANTS for a holiday in October without using credit!

Overall, it was a fun, engaging and meaningful evening with rangatahi and community services coming together. Thank you to all involved It was a real success and a great way to celebrate Youth Week.

Congratulations to Seth from Massey High who won our Lolly jar with a guess of 1026 - actual Lollie's in the jar 1123 - don't forget to brush your teeth!

Today we are supporting Pink Shirt Day and the important awareness work behind it.

Pink Shirt Day is about raising awareness of bullying and promoting kindness, inclusion and respect in our communities, schools and workplaces. It is about creating environments where people feel safe, valued and supported.

At Henderson Budget Service, these values are at the heart of our work. We know that money stress, judgement and past negative experiences can stop people from reaching out for support. Our role is to provide a safe, respectful and judgement free space where people can talk openly about their finances and feel supported to take positive steps forward.

Supporting Pink Shirt Day is one way we show our commitment to awareness, kindness and creating spaces where people feel heard, understood and safe to ask for help.
