Nurturing Families (Formally known as Mummy's In Need) is a not for profit charity that aims to nurture big and little lives through providing essentials to vulnerable families in our community. Nurturing Families works as a support agency for various other organisation's by providing them with items to pass on to their clients. If you are needing assistance please get in touch with your midwife or case worker and have them refer you.

It’s been a while since we’ve shared some of these stories with you, but for our team, we see them every single day, sometimes up to 300 referrals in a month.

Behind every referral is a real family, often facing circumstances they never imagined they would be in. And behind every order we pack is someone in our community helping us say, we’re here, and you don’t have to carry all of this alone.

For some families, it’s relief in a really hard moment. For others, it becomes part of a much bigger turning point.

This is the kind of kindness we love. 🥹

Sophie and Tessa, two young students from Kristin College, dropped off bags and bags of beautiful pre-loved toys, all in amazing condition and ready to be loved all over again.

But they didn’t stop there. They spent hours giving each toy a name and a story, and writing a special message for the child who would receive it.

Such a thoughtful gesture from one child to another. Showing kindness to kids they may never meet, but whose day they might completely make.

Thank you Sophie and Tessa. This one was pretty special. 💕

What does a referral to Nurturing Families actually look like?

It starts with someone who already knows the family.

Our referrals come from trusted professionals who are already walking alongside a family. They understand what’s happening, what support is already in place, and what practical things could make a difference right now.

Sometimes that’s a family struggling to keep their children warm. Sometimes it’s family violence, illness, housing instability, an unexpected hospital stay, or several pressures all hitting at once.

That context matters.

It means our team can read each referral, understand what’s actually needed, and pack support specifically for that family. No two orders are the same.

And when it’s ready, it goes back into the hands of the people who already have that family’s trust and can continue supporting them beyond what we provide.

We’re one part of a much bigger circle of support around a family.

These excerpts are real and have been shared with permission. We’re grateful to the families and caseworkers who have allowed us to share a little more of what sits behind a referral to us here at Nurturing Families. 🤍

August was a big one.

In fact, it was our biggest month of 2026 so far.

Our warehouse was busy, our shelves were moving quickly, and our team and volunteers were working hard to keep up with the number of families needing support.

These numbers are a little snapshot of what August looked like inside Nurturing Families - every order carefully assessed, every box packed for a specific family, and every essential item made possible by the incredible community behind us.

Thank you for donating, sharing, volunteering, supporting and helping us keep those shelves stocked. This is your impact too. ❤

We’re big believers in the little things.

To celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day, Lucy - our Referral Manager Danielle’s daughter - hand wrote these gorgeous little messages for us to share with caseworkers, community donors and volunteers who visited us today.

Kindness sits at the heart of everything we do at Nurturing Families, and today was a lovely excuse to send a little extra of it back out into our community. 💕

A huge thank you to Kerry and the team at Fulton Hogan Civil, who raised funds for Nurturing Families through a raffle at their recent EOFY event!

Fulton Hogan Civil are incredible ongoing supporters of our work, and we’re so grateful that they continue to find ways to get behind the families we support.

Their generous donation will help us purchase essentials to fill the gaps on our shelves, making sure that our Crisis Packs contain the critical items that families need most.

We know it’s tough out there right now. 🤍

The cost of groceries, rent and everyday essentials is putting pressure on so many households, and we know a lot of families are having to make their money stretch further than ever.

But for some families, it goes beyond feeling the pinch. They’re facing real hardship or crisis, and simply don’t have access to the essentials their babies and children need.

That’s where Nurturing Families is here to help.

So if you know someone who is doing it really tough, who is going without the basics or facing circumstances that have left them unable to provide the essentials their children need, please make sure they know we’re here. 🤍

They can talk to their midwife, social worker, case worker or another support professional about making a referral to Nurturing Families.

Because when a family is in crisis, making sure their little people are safe, warm and have the basics shouldn’t be another thing to worry about.
