**A message from Sue (Secretary/Resilience Project – ORRA)**
Are you interested taking our Oratia Resilience Preparedness Project forward?
We made a sterling start last year with this project.. but have lost our momentum.
We held a great introduction meeting, with a number of people interested in being involved, and are receiving support from Community Waitakere.. but have not been able to take the next steps.
My family/home situation at the moment means that I am unable to give the time needed to this project.
So.. is there someone out there that would like to take this volunteer opportunity on and be a champion for the community?
You don’t need to necessarily be on the ORRA committee – as any updates can be reported back to meetings.
I have lots of information that can be passed on, and are happy to help in any way that I can.
Come along to the AGM tonight and have a chat with me – or, if you cant make it tonight, message: [email protected]
What is the purpose of Sunday's Oratia Disaster Response workshop?
**To start the conversation, ask questions and share knowledge.. to explore how we can get ready and start planning what we will all do during a disaster.**
We hope the outcome will be to start a disaster resilience group, and identify who in our community is able to help - before, during and after a disaster.
Could you help? You may want to assist with the planning.. or perhaps you would be happy to volunteer as a street contact, to help with communication in your street during an emergency? Maybe you have resources or skills that might be useful in a disaster? (these could include space for shelter, equipment, machinery, generators etc… or any types of skills such as cooking, communications, admin, first aid, making signs, co-ordinating people, directing traffic, using a chainsaw… or driving a digger… and so much more…)
Or perhaps you have ideas you could bring to the group?
Email [email protected] if you would like to come along on Sunday... or if you would like to be involved in some way..

The Auckland Emergency Management website acknowledges that ‘when disaster strikes, it is often community members who are the first to respond and offer assistance. Practical help for people in need comes mostly from neighbours, whānau and friends living nearby or existing local community groups’.
