Kathy Gent, a member of Company Theatre, admires the bent bayonet made specifically for the theatre group by Derek from the Clay Store. If you are wondering why this rather odd stage prop is so special you'll need to get along to the Company's latest production, 'Once on Chunuk Bair by Maurice Shadbolt. This is one of New Zealand's most powerful war dramas. exploring the cost of war and the forging of our national identity. The production opens this Saturday, the 9th of May and runs until the 23rd of May.

It is with much sadness that we advise of the passing of one of our longest serving Workshop volunteers, Braam Water. Braam passed away peacefully last week, surrounded by his family and we send our condolences to Maike and his family at this sad time.

Braam volunteered at the Devonport Community Workshop for 30 years and was still active up until very recently, when, at the age of 94, he had a stall at our Great Tool Bazaar, selling various electronic devices.

Braam demonstrated some very unique engineering skills. He was super persistent and refused to accept defeat, even when confronted with problems that would deter many people. Braam had a good grasp of electronics which he used extensively in the design of his innovative control systems.

We have lost a real character with exceptional ideas who made a significant contribution to the Workshopโ€™s activities.

There will be a memorial service held for Braam at Holy Trinity Church Street this coming Saturday, 2/5/2026 at 10.00 am. The Devonport Community Workshop will be closed this Saturday as a mark of respect.

Devonport Kindergarten came to us recently with these play Road signs in very poor condition due to swelling of the wood and fading of the signs.

They asked us to do a makeover and give them a new lease on life for the play ground. We replaced the signs with timber rather than the original custom wood so they can now be left outside. The sign writing was done courtesy of Ink & Vinyl Printing at no cost to the Kindergarten (www.inkandvinyl.co.nz).

Devonport Kindergarten were very happy with their revitalised Road signs ๐Ÿ˜€

Introducing Thomas Carlos, a new volunteer at the Devonport Community Workshop.

Thomas volunteers each alternate Saturday and has a background in design in New Zealand and Japan. He works with both traditional hand tools and modern machinery, with an interest in Joinery, including Japanese techniques.

Thomas recently completed a project at the Workshop, creating these speaker enclosures from recycled Rimu. Impressive craftsmanship.

Thomas builds furniture, cabinetry, and custom pieces in solid timber, and also designs and builds valve amplifiers for guitar and hi-fi. His interests extend to general making and modifying, from furniture to cars, and he values sharing skills and learning alongside others. See more on our Website https://www.dcw.org.nz/the-team/thomas-carlos

Weโ€™re now some weeks on from the Great Devonport Tool Bazaar and have the results in.

We raised over $2000 to fund Workshop tool equipment repairs and purchases, plus prepare for the next event. Our stall holders report similar positive results, selling off their tools, plants and miscellaneous items.

Thank you again to our supporters, stall holders and community, for all your support.

We would love your feedback for ideas and suggestions for the next one. Please email to [email protected]
