ДА СЕ МИСЛИ СО МАТЕРИЈАТА: ЧЕТИРИ ЛЕКЦИИ ОД ВОДАТА И ЗЕМЈАТА

Изложбата ќе биде отворена до 14 септември.

Изложбата ги обединува уметничко-истражувачките практики на Валбона Фејза, Христина Крстеска, Ивана Самандова и Викторија Попоска, кои преку конкретни места, материјали, локални истории и знаења ги преиспитуваат нашите односи со природата и повеќе-од-човечките светови.

„Да се мисли со материјата“ предлага поместување од разбирањето на природата како пасивна заднина и ресурс за човечка употреба, насочувајќи го вниманието кон исчезнувањето на локалните знаења и практики, екстракцијата на ресурсите, загадувањето и прекумерната потрошувачка, како и кон грижата како практика на одговорност и ангажман.

Изложбата е дел од „Училиште за грижливи иднини во Скопје“ во рамки на меѓународниот проект „Семиња на солидарноста“. Партнери: Маргарете Маковец од < rotor > Центарот за современа уметност од Грац, Ајете Керкели од Фондација 17 од Приштина, Вида Кнежевиќ од Контекст колектив од Белград, Елке Красни од Академијата за ликовни уметности од Виена и локални партнери. Проектот е инициран од Сојузното министерство за европски и меѓународни прашања на Австрија и Одделот за култура на покраината Штаерска, кој придонесува преку својата мрежа St.A.i.R. (Styria Artists-in-Residence). Изложбата е поддржана и од Амбасадата на Австрија во Република Северна Македонија.

Opening of the “School for Caring Futures in Skopje” and the Exhibition “Thinking with the Matter: Four Lessons from the Water and the Earth”

The opening of the School for Caring Futures in Skopje will take place at the Socio-Cultural Space “Centar-Jadro” with a group exhibition, a welcome note by Hristina Ivanoska (Hristina Ivanoska), Margarethe Makovec (< rotor >) and Yane Calovski (Yane Calovski), and a cocktail prepared by Chef Paul.

Thinking with the Matter: Four Lessons from the Water and the Earth
The exhibition brings together four young artists whose research-based and socially engaged practices explore our relationships with materials, places, ecosystems, and the more-than-human world. Their work begins with local histories, specific places, and forms of knowledge, connecting them to broader questions of ecology, heritage, and environmental responsibility. The artists examine how natural materials and resources are transformed and how these processes affect both human and non-human life. Their practices also challenge the idea that knowledge belongs exclusively to humans, suggesting that matter itself carries memories, histories, and traces of different temporalities. Ultimately, the exhibition invites us to “think with matter” by recognising our interdependence with the material and more-than-human worlds that sustain life.

The curator Jovanka Popova (Jovanka Popova) will guide the audience through the exhibition and introduce the artistic practices of the participating artists Valbona Fejza (Valbona Fejza), Hristina Krsteska (Hristina), Viktorija Poposka (Викторија Попоска) and Ivana Samandova (Ivana Samandova Kj).

The “School for Caring Futures in Skopje 2026” takes place in the frame of “SEEDS OF SOLIDARITY – Artistic Practices and Ecofeminist Alliances for a Caring Future”, an interdisciplinary artistic-curatorial project initiated by the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs and supported by the Cultural Department of the Province of Styria.

SEEDS OF SOLIDARITY
School for Caring Futures in Skopje 2026

The “School for Caring Futures in Skopje” initiates the first phase of multi-year project “SEEDS OF SOLIDARITY—Artistic Practices and Ecofeminist Alliances for a Caring Future”, an interdisciplinary artistic-curatorial initiative dedicated to exploring care as a feminist, ecological and artistic practice across South and Eastern Europe in dialogue with Austrian partners. As the starting point of a long-term process structured through the cycle of sowing, caring, growing and sharing, the project brings together art initiatives, cultural institutions, researchers and communities to establish translocal collaboration, joint learning and the development of sustainable alliances grounded in ecofeminist thinking and relational ecologies of care. In this sense, the School for Caring Futures in Skopje initiates a shared process of situated learning, embodied practice and collective knowledge production that will unfold across the coming years.

.hristina Flesh, 2026 wallpaper, recurring pattern, digitally edited from several cut-outs Commissioned by the evn collection, 2026. 🌸 First presented in the exhibition Tapeti, Skopje, 2026 This wallpaper emerges from Ivanoska’s ongoing project Flesh into Blossom (2024–), inspired by her engagement with the South Eastern European folkloric figure of the Samovila and the writings of Donna Haraway, particularly A Cyborg Manifesto and Staying with the Trouble. Reimagined through a contemporary lens, the Samovila appears as a speculative hybrid being that resonates with Haraway’s understanding of the cyborg as a figure that unsettles established boundaries between human, animal, and technology. For Flesh, Ivanoska employs her non-binary alphabet Archetype Open Form, a visual language that rejects conventional hierarchies of vertical and horizontal structures. Letters are constructed through circles, semicircles, and diagonal forms, deliberately resisting immediate legibility and opening space for ambiguity, imagination, and multiple interpretations. The work is also rooted in the artist’s daily walks through Skopje City Park, where observations of seasonal change, growth, and ecological interdependence become a source of reflection. A recurring motif within the composition is the woodpecker. Initially encountered through sound rather than sight, the bird evolved into a central visual element, embodying vitality, rhythm, and the living pulse of urban nature. Surrounded by mushrooms and willow branches, it inhabits a fragile ecosystem in which signs of regeneration coexist with subtle traces of vulnerability and potential loss. Balancing ornamental, floral, and organic forms with the almost documentary presence of the bird, Flesh creates a poetic tension between imagination and observation. Characteristic of Ivanoska’s socially engaged and introspective practice, the wallpaper transforms everyday encounters into a layered visual narrative. Text: Heike Maier-Rieper

Промоцијата на книгата „Женска работа: Современиот вез во земјите од поранешна Југославија“, уредена од Амалија Стојсављевиќ, ќе се одржи на 4 јуни (четврток) во 18:30 часот, проследена со камерна изложба на текстил и вез од Христина Иваноска, Зорица Зафировска и Дарко Алексовски, отворена до 9 јуни.

Промоцијата во Скопје е замислена како разговор помеѓу уредничката, српската кураторка и културна работничка Амалија Стојсављевиќ, и уметниците Христина Иваноска, Зорица Зафировска и Дарко Алексовски, чии дела се вклучени во публикацијата. Разговорот ќе го отвори прашањето зошто текстилот долго време бил на маргините на уметноста и што се менува кога уметниците го користат како средство за критика, отпор и поврзување.

Книгата обединува 30 автори, колективи и практики од регионот, претставувајќи го везот како уметнички јазик што произлегува од традицијата на рачната изработка, но ја надминува. Преку овој медиум се отвораат теми за женскиот труд, телото, сеќавањето, секојдневието, солидарноста и социјалните нееднаквости. Книгата е објавена на српски и англиски јазик.

The launch of the book “Distaff: Contemporary Embroidery in the Former Yugoslav Countries,” edited by Amalia Stojsavljević, will take place on June 4 at 18:30, accompanied by a small exhibition of textile and embroidery works by Hristina Ivanoska, Zorica Zafirovska, and Darko Aleksovski, on view until June 9.

The event is conceived as a conversation between editor and curator Amalia Stojsavljević and the three artists featured in the publication. The discussion will address why textile has long been marginalized within art and what changes when artists employ it as a medium of critique, resistance, and connection.

The book brings together 30 artists, collectives, and practices from across the region, presenting embroidery as an artistic language rooted in craft traditions while moving beyond them. Through embroidery, the selected artists engage with themes of women’s labor, the body, memory, everyday life, solidarity, and social inequalities.
