Anshika Horo from Barsuan, Barbil, Odisha, grew up in a family where girls were not easily allowed to step outside the home. She dreamed of becoming independent and creating a better future for her family.

After losing her father at a young age, Anshika continued her education until Grade 12 despite financial hardships. Her mother earns ₹8,000 per month by cooking for labourers. Her eldest brother, who studied until Grade 7, works at a tiles factory earning ₹10,000 per month, while her second brother, who studied until Grade 8, worked as a driver but has been unemployed for the past two months.

While looking for opportunities, Anshika learned about Barbil Lighthouse, Odisha through a relative. At the Lighthouse, she built confidence, improved her communication skills, learned teamwork and developed workplace competencies. Foundation Course activities like the Rope Activity, Breathing Exercises and Visualization Sessions helped her become more confident and focused.

After completing the Foundation Course, she applied her learning during the placement process and secured a job as a Steward at Sangam Palace, earning ₹8,500 per month.

Her income is helping strengthen her family's financial security while her journey is building greater agency, confidence and aspirations among girls and families in her community. In the neighborhood, many parents are now beginning to encourage their daughters to do the same.

With the support of SBI Foundation, Lighthouse Communities Foundation continues to support youth like Anshika in building brighter futures with dignity, confidence and skills.

Ankita Naik grew up in Champatimunda Gram Panchayat, Angul district (Odisha). In her family, education was valued despite financial challenges. Her father is a small farmer and her mother is a homemaker. With three sisters at home, Ankita often helped her mother with household responsibilities and cared for her younger sisters.

After completing her Grade 12th in Arts in 2021, Ankita faced an uncertain path. She was shy, lacked confidence and had no clear career direction. Watching her parents manage household expenses fueled a deep desire within her to become financially independent. She wanted to support her family and contribute to her younger sisters’ education, but she did not know how to begin.

That changed when she joined the Barbil Lighthouse. During the Foundation Course, she built spoken English and AI literacy skills. She also received career counselling support and participated in interview preparation sessions. Gradually, she became more confident and identified livelihood pathways for herself. She discovered a passion for communication and began dreaming of building a stable career – something that would in turn enable her to support her sisters’ education.

Today, Ankita is taking a confident step toward a sustained livelihood and a brighter future. In May, Ankita secured her first job as a Telecaller at Rita Automobile Pvt. Ltd. in Angul, earning ₹9,000 per month. In her role, she connects with customers, communicates information and supports business enquiries. She dreams of growing professionally, supporting her family and helping her sisters build a better future.

With the support of SBI Foundation, Lighthouse Communities Foundation continues to support youth like Ankita in building brighter futures with dignity, confidence and skills.

Prashant spent nearly a decade preparing for government examinations. Repeated setbacks left him without stable employment or a clear career direction—but he was determined to find another path.

At Lighthouse, career counselling and mentoring helped him understand his strengths, explore possibilities and build the confidence and skills to navigate the world of work. He eventually chose to pursue a career in aviation, securing his first role with SpiceJet and later moving to Air India, nearly doubling his monthly salary. Currently, he is working as an Aviation Security Officer at AI Airport Services Limited (AIASL) which is a Public Sector Unit (PSU) under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India.

But Prashant’s journey didn’t end there. Inspired by his own experience, he went on to start Aviation Seekers Academy, helping aspiring young people build careers in aviation. Eight young people have already secured placements through his efforts.

Stories like Prashant’s reinforce why youth need more than a training course. They need agency, confidence, guidance, access to relevant skilling and livelihood opportunities and mentorship to shape their careers.

At Lighthouse Communities Foundation, the Program Design & Curriculum Team works to ensure exactly this—strengthening the relevance, quality and consistency of our programs across Lighthouse centres, informed by data, field insights and youth voice.

We are grateful to CAF America for supporting Mission Cell and enabling us to continually strengthen the programs that help young people discover their potential and build meaningful livelihoods.

Data is shaping the way we work, solve problems and make decisions. Lighthouse youth got to explore this world firsthand.

On 7 August, Chinchwad Lighthouse welcomed the State Street team for a session that went far beyond building an understanding of data analytics. Alongside Vice Presidents Rupa Krothapalli, Gauri Moghe and Dnyanesh Deshpande, the team spent the day with over 45 young minds, breaking down several complex concepts, sharing real workplace stories, and demonstrating to our youth what a career in the corporate world actually looks like.

For many of these young people, this was their first real conversation with industry professionals. The questions kept coming. The energy never dropped. And by the end of the session, what began as a volunteering visit had turned into something bigger — a glimpse of possibility. This is what collective action looks like at Lighthouses. Industry leaders showing up, sharing knowledge, and opening doors for underserved youth to realize their full potential through sustained livelihoods.

Thank you, State Street, for your continued investment in Lighthouse youth.

At the Women’s Health Camp organized by Pune Municipal Corporation at Dandekar Bridge, Sinhagad Road, 14 young volunteers from Lighthouse supported the program and helped community members access the health services available at the camp.

The engagement also gave us an opportunity to meet Hon. Smt. Madhuri Misal, State Minister, Government of Maharashtra; Smt. Manjusha Nagpure, Hon. Mayor, PMC; Shri Parshuram Ji Wadekar, Hon. Deputy Mayor, PMC; and Smt. Priya Gadade Patil, Corporator, PMC. We shared how our 14 Lighthouse Centres across Pune continue to grow in partnership with PMC’s support.

At Lighthouse, we do not just prepare youth for jobs. We prepare them to lead, to serve and to show up for the communities that raised them.

That is citizenship in action.

A recent feature in The Times of India by Mohua Das explores how a new generation of skilling models is moving beyond generic training to connect young people from underserved communities with real employer demand, career pathways and opportunities for sustained livelihoods.

We are joyful to see the our work featured in this conversation, with Amruta Bahulekar, CEO, LCF, sharing our perspective on what it takes to bridge the gap between young people and the world of work.

At Lighthouse, we believe skilling is not simply about completing a course or securing a first job. It is about helping young people build agency, make informed career choices, access relevant skills and navigate their careers with confidence.
