From Paper to Plan — Community & IMC Design Review

This is what community-led design looks like. Residents, the Ichalkaranji Municipal Corporation, and our team in the same room, going through building plans together.
No plan gets finalised until the people who’ll live there have had their say.

Officially partnered with Ichalkaranji Municipal Corporation for citywide mapping of informal settlements. 🤝

The MoU was exchanged in the presence of MP Dhairyasheel Mane, MLA Rahul Awade, Municipal Commissioner Pallavi Patil, Deputy Mayor Anil Daliya, and senior IMC officials, along with Ar.Pratima Joshi representing Shelter Associates. The mapping is supported through a CSR grant by Bank of America.

Data first, so no household gets left off the map.

We are delighted to share that Shelter Associates has been recognised as the Jury's Top Choice at the Desi Dhaakad Sustainability Excellence Awards 2026, held at the National Stock Exchange, Mumbai.

This recognition is a reflection of over 30 years of working alongside communities, governments and partners to build more inclusive, resilient and sustainable cities through data-driven, community-led solutions.

It was also a proud moment for our Founder, Ar. Pratima Joshi, who was recognised as 'Jal Rakshak' for her contribution to sustainable urban development.

Our sincere thanks to the Desi Dhaakad Sustainability Excellence Awards, the distinguished jury and the organisers for this honour. Congratulations to all the fellow awardees whose work is creating meaningful impact across sectors.

The evening was made even more memorable by the thought-provoking fireside conversations with distinguished speakers and the captivating cultural performance by the talented troupe from Varanasi, celebrating India's rich heritage and the spirit of sustainability.

Here's to continuing our collective journey towards creating cities that are more inclusive, equitable and sustainable.

We were part of the joint discussion at Goonj’s Menstruation Dialogue this year, represented by Dhanashree KM, our Associate Executive Director.

We were also featured in the first Special Issue of Menstruation Dialogue 2026 — one of 12 papers from across India’s grassroots. Our paper draws on our menstrual hygiene management work using reusable menstrual cups, part of our Sustainable Sanitation Model.

Our GIS team is going lane by lane through the settlements — recording who lives where, what's missing, what's already working.
It's slow, on-foot work. But it's the layer everything else stands on.

Honoured 🏅

Shelter Associates has received an Honorary Mention for Tech Innovation & Sustainability at the Resilience in Action Awards 2026, presented at the Synergy and Sustainability Symposium V by INDIAdonates

The recognition is for our GIS-based spatial mapping work — making informal settlements visible within city systems, so housing and sanitation planning can be built on real, on-ground data.
