We sterilise and vaccinate stray dogs in Pune, PCMC, and other areas at no cost. For more info, contact [email protected]

Canine Control and Care is a Pune based NGO. The main objective of CCC is to reduce the stray dog/cat population in Pune by sterilization. We neuter and vaccinate the stray dog/cat free of cost. The dog or cat is brought to us by volunteers or concerned members of society. Our own vets and assistants perform the surgery. We spay/neuter the stray dogs/cats under general anaesthesia and notch the ears to mark the sterilized dogs. We also vaccinate the operated dog against Rabies. We post operative care at a nominal charge of Rs 400 per dog. We have our own Post Op facility at Home on the Hill in Bhugaon. We also conduct ABC surgeries at Blue Cross. We urge all animal lovers to conduct feeding programs in their locality. This enables you to befriend the strays and bring them to us for surgery.

Do Dogs Dream When They Sleep?

Have you noticed dogs twitching their paws, fluttering their eyes, whimpering, or barking while they sleep? These movements suggest dogs are dreaming. Like us, dogs sleep in cycles. They also go through phases of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and slow-wave (non-REM) sleep, the stage when dreaming happens.

So, what do dogs dream about? Probably the day they just had – it could be chasing a ball or a squirrel that got away (again). Probably a walk. Sleep helps them process and consolidate memories, learn new skills, and potentially fulfill emotional or instinctual needs.

Small-breed dogs weirdly experience shorter but more frequent dreams than large-breed dogs. Puppies and senior dogs spend more time in REM sleep and tend to dream more.

Dogs get nightmares too. They often whimper or growl in their sleep. Never ever wake or disturb a dog who is fast asleep, as startling a dog out of REM sleep can cause disorientation and confusion. Instead, call their name softly from a distance if you have to, and let them wake up on their own.

CCC - Highlights for last week! October 2026

In the 2nd week of October CCC centers successfully sterilised 126+ stray dogs across various areas of Pune city. The sterilisation procedures were conducted smoothly, and the dogs are now healthy and recovering well.

At CCC, we provide free sterilisation services for stray dogs, adhering to the 5-day sterilisation process established by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI). Dogs are released back to their locations on the 5th day after being deemed fit by our veterinary team.

Additionally, we also provide free Anti-rabies and 9-in-1 vaccines to all dogs post-sterilisation.

Zero by Thirty: CCC conducts FREE Rabies Awareness Training Sessions

In support of the global mission to eliminate rabies by 2030, Canine Control and Care (CCC) is conducting FREE Rabies Awareness Training Sessions for schools, colleges, offices, hospitals, and government offices! Sessions are available online via Google Meet/Zoom and can be delivered in Marathi, English, or Hindi.

Why does it matter?

Rabies is a deadly disease, but it's 100% preventable with timely vaccinations for both humans and dogs. Let's raise awareness together!

On 16th October, 2026, we conducted 6 awareness sessions at Priyadarshini High School, Vanrai, Dhankawadi, Pune. Over 282+ students along with their teachers attended the sessions.

Rabies and 9-in-1 - The Two Vaccines Every Stray Dog Needs!

Vaccinating dogs is crucial for animal welfare, disease prevention, and public health. Vaccination protects dogs from multiple contagious diseases that can affect their gastrointestinal, respiratory, and nervous systems, among other bodily functions. It also builds herd immunity and prevents the transmission of contagious diseases to other dogs and humans.

Some of the most important vaccinations are:
• Anti-rabies vaccine – protects dogs against rabies, a fatal infectious disease that can spread to humans and other animals too. By vaccinating all dogs against rabies, we can help prevent any outbreaks as rabies is a 100% vaccine-preventable disease. CCC conducts Free ARV drives for stray dogs in Pune PMC and PCMC areas. • 9-in-1 vaccine – this comprehensive vaccine protects dogs against diseases like Canine Distemper Virus (CDV), Canine Parvovirus (CPV), Canine Adenovirus Type 1 and Type 2, Parainfluenza-Leptospirosis (multiple strains), Coronavirus (in some formulations).

At CCC, every stray dog sterilised at our centre is given Anti-Rabies Vaccine (ARV) and 9-in-1 vaccine as part of its comprehensive, humane, and science-backed Animal Birth Control (ABC).

Please note – we do not provide vaccinations at our facility for pet dogs or cats. You can contact local vet hospitals or animal NGOs for vaccinating your pets.

Axel and Zoom – The Nation’s Canine Heroes!

Not all superheroes wear capes. Some are draped in fur.

Axel and Zoom, two Belgian Malinois army assault dogs of the Indian Army, sacrificed their lives in 2022.

Axel entered a building ahead of the assault team and detected a terrorist hiding inside. While carrying out his duty, he sustained fatal injuries and later succumbed to them. His alert helped save the lives of many people nearby.

Zoom was shot during an anti-terror operation, yet he kept fighting. With a bullet lodged in his neck, he went through a five-hour surgery as doctors tried everything, but in vain.

These canines are usually the first responders in counter-insurgency operations. They save countless lives by putting themselves in danger, shielding and alerting the Indian Army.

This is a salute to every canine hero who served this country with courage and loyalty.

Rabies prevention begins before a bite!

Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, but prompt medical care after exposure can prevent the disease. Preventing bites is part of that effort: learning to read a dog’s signals and giving dogs space can help reduce risky encounters.

Help children understand these basics:
- Don’t approach, touch or try to pet an unfamiliar dog.
- Give dogs space when they’re eating, sleeping, injured or caring for puppies.
- Don’t corner, tease, chase or startle a dog. If a dog seems uncomfortable, move away calmly and give it room.

If any animal bites or scratches you and breaks the skin:
1. Wash and flush the wound with soap and running tap water for at least 15 minutes.
2. Go to a doctor or hospital immediately, even if the wound looks small. Don’t wait for symptoms.
3. Follow the doctor’s advice on rabies vaccination and, if needed, rabies immunoglobulin. Complete the prescribed course.

People can benefit from rabies vaccination before an exposure; please ask a doctor or anti-rabies clinic about pre-exposure vaccination - there are only 3 vaccines needed for the pre-exposure schedule. But remember that this does not remove the need for medical care after a bite or scratch.

Mass dog vaccination, bite-prevention awareness trainings, and timely access to human pre and post exposure vaccination all help prevent rabies. Let’s share facts and help keep people and animals safe.

Happy Release Day At CCC!

It’s release day for this stray dog at CCC. The volunteer has arrived to take this dog back to the original location. And we love these sweet reunion moments!

Stray dogs are brought to CCC for sterilisation. After completing post-operative care with us, they are scheduled for release on the 5th day, once the vet deems them fit for release. They then head back to their original location – healthy, safe, and protected.

CCC offers FREE sterilisation for stray dogs in the Pune PMC and PCMC areas. We follow the 5-day sterilisation process for ABC (Animal Birth Control) program as per AWBI (Animal Welfare Board of India) guidelines which includes surgery and post-operative care. All dogs sterilised at CCC are vaccinated with ARV (Anti-Rabies Vaccination) and 9-in-1 for added protection.
