Our team participated in the National Conference on “Human Wildlife Conflict, Co-existence and Biodiversity Conservation” held at Kuvempu University, Shivamogga.

The conference was graced by eminent dignitaries including Prof. Sharath Ananthamurthy, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Kuvempu University, Shri. Kumar Pushkar, IFS, PCCF (Wildlife) & Chief Wildlife Warden, Karnataka Forest Department, and Shri. Yashpal Kshirsagar, IFS, Conservator of Forests, Chikkamagaluru Circle.

During the conference, our team presented an abstract poster titled:
“From Awareness to Action: Participatory Pathways Driving Community Adoption of Elephant Conflict Mitigation in the Uttara Kannada Landscape.”

The presentation focused on community-based conflict management approaches, awareness initiatives, hands-on training, and participatory mitigation measures promoting sustainable human–elephant coexistence.

We are grateful to the organizers, researchers, conservationists, and wildlife experts for providing an inspiring platform to share knowledge and field experiences.

Celebrating the ancient wanderers of the sea! Happy ! 🐢✨

Sea turtles are essential to the health of our marine ecosystems, but they are facing critical threats from habitat destruction, plastic pollution, and climate change. Protecting these ancient wonders isn’t just about saving a species; it’s about preserving the delicate balance of our oceans.

The Wildlife Research and Conservation Society stands committed to the ongoing protection of our natural world. Today, we urge you to join the pledge: reduce plastic waste, respect coastal habitats, and advocate for safe oceans. 🌊💙

Together, we can ensure they keep swimming for another million years.

This field report by Vishnu Pattayil , Bidesh Tripura, Pradyut Rao , Ramchandra L. Kasdekar , and Dr. Prachi Mehta details the first documented association between a lone Indian wolf (Canis lupus pallipes) and a pack of dholes (Cuon alpinus) in India’s Melghat Tiger Reserve .

Over three separate observations between March and May 2025, a solitary male wolf was seen traveling and resting alongside two adult dholes and their three pups near the boundary of the reserve’s core and buffer zones. Notably, the animals displayed no signs of fear, aggression, or defensive behavior, even with the wolf in close proximity to the young pups.

The authors highlight this unusual, non-antagonistic relationship as a rare instance of behavioral flexibility and tolerance among large sympatric carnivores, which may be driven by factors such as shared space use along habitat edges or a lack of conspecifics (members of the same species) for the solitary wolf.

🐘 *From Training to Action: Community-Made Elephant Deterrent Initiative*
Over the last two months (April–May), WRCS supported farmers across 28 villages in preparing and implementing community-based elephant mitigation measures through a *Collaborative 50:50 contribution approach*

WRCS provided key materials including 18 kg of chilli, ginger, garlic, and green chilli, while farmers actively contributed locally available resources such as grass, cow dung, cow urine, and neem leaves for preparing traditional deterrents.

Together, farmers and the project team prepared and implemented:
🌶️ 3 Chilli Chudis
🌶️ 91 Chilli Dung Cakes
🌶️ 14 Chilli Tins
💨 30 Liters of Smelly Solution

Farmers were trained to prepare the smelly solution by grinding ginger, garlic, and chilli, mixing them with cow dung, cow urine, and neem leaves, and fermenting the mixture before field application in conflict-prone areas.

This collaborative approach is helping strengthen local participation, skill-building, and sustainable non-lethal solutions for reducing human–elephant conflict.
