When Children Learn Coexistence with Animals, Communities Change.

Across Bhopal and Delhi, our Compassionate Classroom workshops continued to spark meaningful conversations around dog bite prevention, rabies awareness, and living safely alongside community dogs.

What made this week especially memorable was seeing students bring learning to life through role plays and real-life scenarios. From understanding dog body language to practising safe responses around community dogs, children didn't just learn the concepts; they experienced them firsthand.

Through curiosity, teamwork, and thoughtful discussions, students discovered that coexistence goes beyond safety.

As we celebrated India’s freedom, our Animal Ambassadors reflected on an important question: “Do animals deserve freedom too?”

As part of this month’s Animal Ambassador Club activity, students expressed their thoughts through essays that were filled with empathy, thoughtful reflections, and powerful ideas about what freedom, dignity, and kindness mean for animals.

Reading their words gave us hope that the next generation is growing up with compassion at its heart.

Compassionate Echoes @ University Institute of Technology, Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya, Bhopal.

What happens when you ask young people to look closely at their everyday habits?

During the new batch's induction at UIT RGPV, STRAW India led a session that went far beyond standard awareness. Using the concept of animal sentience as a lens, we explored the realities of street animals, as well as those used in entertainment, experimentation, and food production.

What made the session unforgettable was the response. The room lit up with questions. Students didn't just listen; they actively challenged norms, dissected the hidden impact of their lifestyle choices, and began re-evaluating how their everyday decisions shape the world around them.

Seeing the next generation pause, reflect, and choose to care is what humane education is all about.

Compassionate Classroom: August 2nd Week 2 Highlights from Bangalore and Hyderabad

Our team visited schools to guide students through three steps to building compassionate neighbourhoods by learning how to help animals in need and understanding the role of vaccination and sterilization. We discussed how rabies vaccinations protect both street animals and residents.

The children were incredibly receptive, quickly learning that staying calm around street dogs keeps everyone safe, that leaving out fresh water is an easy act of daily care, and that vaccinated dogs make for healthier, safer colonies.

Humane education equips young minds with practical safety skills while nurturing lifelong empathy for all living beings. Invite us to your school to teach safety and kindness to your students.

What does it look like when kids realize they have the power to change an animal’s life? 🐾

This week, across Hyderabad and Bangalore, our classrooms were full of lightbulb moments, deep curiosity, and pure heart!

📍 Meridian School, Kukatpally, Grade 7
We asked the big questions: Why do we love some animals and ignore others?

Our 7th graders dove headfirst into understanding speciesism. We looked closely at the lives of street animals, captive animals, and those used in testing. By the end of the session, these young leaders were making heartfelt pledges to stand up for animals every chance they get.

📍 Abheek Academy, Grades 5–8
At Abheek, compassion got creative!

Our older students (Grades 6–8) rolled up their sleeves to paint mud-water bowls to keep neighbourhood dogs hydrated in the heat, proving that kindness is something you do. Meanwhile, our Grade 5 students unlocked the magic of storytelling to debunk black cat superstitions, replacing old myths with understanding and love. 🐈‍⬛❤

August is off to a great start with our Compassionate Classrooms across three cities!

With 1,206 students across Bhopal, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, our Compassionate Classroom sessions brought big ideas down to heart level.

We started by exploring the meaning of Sentience; the students recognize animals as conscious, feeling beings rather than resources, which opened their eyes to how we use and treat different species.

Building on that foundation, we talked about the quiet ways community dogs suffer because of human actions and how we can actively step up to protect them. This led to crucial discussions on rabies awareness, dog bite prevention, and practical safety steps for coexisting.

Through honest discussions and fresh perspectives, these young minds realized how simple, mindful actions create safer, kinder spaces for everyone.

Three cities, hundreds of curious minds, and a whole new generation stepping up for animals.

What does kindness look like when you put it into action? 🐾

For the first week of August, students across Bangalore and Hyderabad gave us the answer through the Compassionate Horizon Program:

At Redbridge International Academy, we painted mud water bowls and transformed old fabrics into soft beds for local dogs.

At the Samhita Academy, we learned how to tend to injured animals and visited a sanctuary to witness real-life shelter work firsthand.

At Delhi Public School, we time-travelled to ancient history to dismantle old black cat superstitions using curiosity and logic.

At Indic International School, we explored the Five Freedoms of Animals and brainstormed practical ways to help them in their daily life.

These hands-on experiences do more than teach; they transform how children see animals. By recognizing animal vulnerability firsthand, students move from passive sympathy to active empathy, turning compassion into a lifelong instinct to protect and advocate.
