Swechha India

Swechha India Swechha is a youth-run, youth-focused NGO engaged in environmental, social development and active citizenship issues.

Objectives

Our main objective as a movement is to re-establish a connection with the environment as a whole among the people of Delhi and beyond. We aim to encourage and assist young people to become socially and environmentally responsible individuals through education, awareness, and support. We want to make volunteering a mainstream activity for young people from all walks of life in India

. Approach

Many of the problems Swechha tackles stem from indifference and apathy. Consequently, Swechha strives to inspire individual and collective action, using awareness, communication, training and advocacy as primary tools. We believe that exposure and empowerment, especially at a young age, can dilute the apathy that many feel when it comes to acting on social and environmental injustices. The next generation should not be bystanders that silently watch the problems of their community, their country, and their world get worse. We use a variety of methods such as experiential learning, street plays, games and films to disseminate knowledge and further participatory development. We aspire to keep our approaches innovative; and through our staff’s contagious excitement, we hope to continue to grow as an organization that successfully empowers people. By engaging people in activities that sustain and strengthen human values of community, we work to create a stronger society. We organise our work into programmes, with our three areas of focus – environment and education, youth and civil society, and active citizenship, woven throughout them all.

Not every state flower is chosen for beauty alone 💜🌿

Delhi’s Alfalfa tells a story of resilience: deep roots, dry summers, and land that keeps giving back. Quietly growing in the city’s green edges, it reminds us that strength in nature often looks simple.

Sometimes the most important plants are the ones we walk past every day.

Delhi isn’t just getting hotter, our cities are holding on to that heat.
What feels like “just summer” is also climate change meeting bad urban planning. Earlier heatwaves, hotter nights, less green cover, more concrete.
And like always, the worst heat is felt by those with the least protection from it.
Heat is not just weather.
It’s a question of access, inequality, and survival.

With students from 5th grade, we built a small food garden using simple grow bags, planting cucumbers, butter gourd, chillies, ridge gourd, capsicum and more. What started as tiny saplings is now something they’ll nurture, watch grow, and eventually harvest themselves.

Because growing food isn’t just about plants, it’s about patience, care, and understanding where our food really comes from.

Meet the resilient Babool 🌿

You’ve probably walked past it a hundred times without noticing, standing strong in dry heat, quietly thriving where little else can. From its tiny feathery leaves to those bright yellow puff flowers, the Babool is a reminder of how beautifully nature adapts.

Next time you’re out, look a little closer. Our city is full of stories like this. 💛🌳

We were just finishing up watering our plants when a butterfly showed up 🦋
We didn’t even need to wait for our garden to grow for the butterfly to know this space was for it.

Maybe that’s how simple it is.
You make a little space for nature… and it finds its way back 🌱

Delhi is heating up again, and this summer is expected to be longer, harsher, and more unpredictable. What we’re seeing isn’t just rising temperatures, but a shift in how heat behaves, arriving earlier, staying longer, and hitting harder.

But heat is not experienced equally.
It reveals the fault lines of the city- who has access to shade, water, cooling, and who doesn’t.

For many, this isn’t just about discomfort.
It’s about health, livelihoods, and survival.

As temperatures rise, so do the risks.
The question is, are our cities really prepared?

Over 3000 students, countless conversations, and so many seeds of change!

Hear it from the students themselves, their learnings, their reflections, and the moments that stayed with them. From discovering biodiversity to learning about how to grow our food, these voices remind us why this work matters.💚

The boys of Harkesh Nagar Government School didn’t just build a garden, they nurtured a space for life to return. With their own hands, they prepared the land, planted pollinator-friendly species, and watered each sapling with patience and pride.

Another butterfly garden takes root, and with it, a promise of more colour, more life, and more care for our environment 🦋

Meet Delhi’s largest, bluest, and most resilient resident! 🏙️💙

Did you know the Nilgai is Asia’s largest antelope and Delhi’s official state animal? Our original “city slicker” has learned to navigate urban life, but they still need our help to stay safe on the roads and preserve their Aravalli homes.
