# # **Healthy Choices Begin Young: An Inspiring Day at Eva School, Thane**

Today, the **Kidney Warriors Foundation team** had the opportunity to interact with students of **Eva School, Thane**, a Cambridge curriculum school, through two engaging sessions on **overall health, healthy eating and kidney health**.

The sessions were conducted for **Grades 1–4 and Grades 5–9**. What stood out was not just the children's enthusiasm to learn, but how actively they participated.

We spoke about **what our kidneys do, why they are important, healthy food choices, exercise and simple everyday habits** that can help us stay healthy. The children had plenty of ideas of their own about what we should eat more of and what we should eat less often. The quiz and interactive activities brought even more energy into the sessions, with enthusiastic answers and lots of questions.

# # # **And then came a wonderful surprise!**

**Brenden, a Grade 6 student**, brought up the recent food-safety measures being implemented in Maharashtra and asked about the changes introduced by **FDA Maharashtra Commissioner Mr. Tukaram Mundhe**. He was particularly interested in the restrictions around the sale of **chips, chocolates, cold drinks and other unhealthy packaged foods in and around schools**.

It was wonderful to see that children are not only listening to health conversations but are also **aware of what is happening around them and thinking about how these changes affect their everyday lives.**

For KWF, this is exactly why **health awareness needs to begin early**. Children don't need complicated medical information. They need simple, practical knowledge about **why the choices they make today can help them stay healthier tomorrow.**

# # # 💧 Extreme Heat & Dialysis: “Drink More Water” Isn’t Always the Answer

At the **National Multistakeholder Consultation on the Impact of Extreme Heat on CKMDs**, held in **Delhi on 7 August**, **Vasundhara Raghavan** highlighted an important concern: the usual advice to “drink more water” does not apply equally to everyone with kidney disease.

For people with high BP, early-stage CKD, or kidney transplant recipients, maintaining appropriate hydration may be important as advised by their doctor.

**But dialysis patients face a different challenge.**

Many are on **fluid restrictions** and cannot simply drink more water to manage thirst or extreme heat. Too much fluid can cause **fluid overload and put additional strain on the heart.**

# # # What can help?

🏥 Dialysis centres can consider:

* **Early morning dialysis** during extreme heat
* Curtains/shade and **wet napkins** to help patients cool down
* Appropriate food options such as cucumber, **within individual fluid restrictions**
* Guidance from the dialysis team and nephrologist

🚗 **Safe travel arrangements** can help patients avoid missing dialysis sessions.

📞 A **24/7 helpline**, along with online dietitian support, could provide timely guidance to patients and caregivers during heatwaves.

**Extreme heat needs practical, patient-centred solutions — especially for people who cannot simply “drink more water.”**

💚 Walking for Life, Walking for Organ Donation 💚

A meaningful day of awareness, hope and solidarity for organ donation! 🫶

From Kidney Warriors Foundation (KWF), Jagan, Ananth and Viresh had the privilege of participating in the Organ Donor Day Walkathon organised by NU Hospitals.

🚶‍♂️ The walk began at Vidhana Soudha and continued all the way to NU Hospitals, Millers Road, bringing together 250+ participants united by one powerful message — the gift of organ donation can give someone a second chance at life.

🎤 Ananth also spoke about the importance of kidney transplantation and, most importantly, the invaluable role of organ donors and their families in giving patients a new lease of life.

It was a very well-organised and inspiring event, bringing patients, families, healthcare professionals, supporters and volunteers together for a cause that truly matters.

*A Step Forward for Kidney Transplant Patients in Maharashtra.*

Today, a delegation from the *Kidney Warriors Foundation* met with the Hon'ble Minister of Public Health, Government of Maharashtra, *Shri Prakashji Abitkar*, in Mumbai to raise the urgent issue of the discontinuation of free immunosuppressant medicines for kidney transplant recipients under the *Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY).*

The delegation comprised:
• *Ms. Vasundhara Raghavan* – CEO, Kidney Warriors Foundation
• *Raviraj Patil* – KWF Maharashtra State Coordinator
• *Ajay Rathod* – Member Kidney Warriors Foundation
• *Prof. Pandhari Gaddapwar* – KWF Nanded District Representative

• *Baneshwar Nikale* – KWF Ahilyanagar District Representative
• *Ajay Phad* – KWF Parbhani District Representative

Despite his demanding schedule, the Hon'ble Minister patiently listened to the concerns of the transplant recipients and assured the delegation that *until the supply of these life-saving medicines is restored through the Central Government or the Ayushman Bharat scheme, the Government of Maharashtra will make every possible effort to take necessary measures at the state level to ensure that kidney transplant patients continue to receive these essential medicines.*

We sincerely thank *Shri Yuvraj ji Parit* for his invaluable support in facilitating this important meeting.

This is not just about medicines—it is about protecting the lives of thousands of kidney transplant recipients who depend on uninterrupted immunosuppressant therapy every single day. We remain hopeful that a positive and timely decision will bring much-needed relief to patients across Maharashtra.
