In a world where division often makes the headlines, building stronger communities requires something different: connection.

The latest RENS newsletter reflects on a simple but powerful truth: communities thrive when people have opportunities to meet, listen, learn, and stand alongside one another.

Over the past few weeks, we have seen this in action through community conversations, cultural celebrations, partnership working, and Refugee Week activities. Each event reminds us that inclusion is not just a value, it is a practice. It happens when people share their stories, challenge assumptions, and create spaces where everyone feels they belong.

This year's Refugee Week theme, Courage, feels particularly relevant.

Courage is not only found in extraordinary moments. It is found in everyday acts of welcome, kindness, understanding, and solidarity. It is found in people who choose dialogue over division and community over isolation.

At RENS, we remain committed to creating opportunities for people from all backgrounds to come together, be heard, and contribute to the future of our communities.

Stronger communities are not built by chance. They are built by people.

Today, on Windrush Day, we honour the men, women, and families of the Windrush Generation whose courage, resilience, and determination helped shape modern Britain.

When the passengers of the Empire Windrush arrived in 1948, they answered a call to help rebuild a nation recovering from war. Their contributions, and those of the generations that followed, have enriched every part of British life – from the NHS and public services to education, culture, business, sport, and the arts.

Windrush Day is more than a commemoration of a historic arrival. It is an opportunity to celebrate the enduring legacy of Caribbean communities, to reflect on the challenges many faced, and to recognise the ongoing work needed to build a fairer and more inclusive society.

At RENS, we believe that every community is strengthened when people's histories, cultures, and contributions are valued and respected. The story of Windrush is a story of courage, perseverance, belonging, and hope. It reminds us that diversity is one of our greatest strengths and that our shared future is built on mutual understanding and respect.

What does courage look like?

Sometimes courage is crossing borders in search of safety.

Sometimes it is rebuilding a life in an unfamiliar place.

Sometimes it is finding hope after loss, speaking your truth, or choosing kindness in the face of adversity.

As part of 'Refugee Week 2026', RENS invites you to join us for a special Film Festival exploring this year's theme: 'Courage'.

Through a powerful collection of short films, documentaries, animations, and feature-length stories, we will journey through experiences of displacement, migration, resilience, belonging, and community. These films remind us that behind every headline is a human story - a story of strength, determination, and the universal desire to find a place to call home.

At a time when conversations about migration and identity often become polarised, storytelling has the power to build understanding, challenge assumptions, and bring people together.

Whether you come for one film or stay for the entire programme, we invite you to be part of an afternoon of reflection, learning, and connection.

Standing Together for Community Cohesion

In a time when many communities are facing increasing division, uncertainty, and social challenges, creating opportunities for meaningful dialogue has never been more important.

Join us for an important conversation as part of the Independent Commission on Community & Cohesion's National Conversation. Together, we will explore what needs to change to build stronger, safer, and more connected communities where everyone feels they belong.

This is an opportunity for local residents, community groups, businesses, faith organisations, public services, and voluntary sector partners to come together, share experiences, listen to different perspectives, and contribute to a national discussion about the future of community cohesion in the UK.

Thursday 11 June, 5:00pm – 7:00pm
The Other Place, 81-83 Meadow St, BS23 1QL

No booking is required, and a shared supper will be provided.

By listening to one another and working together, we can help create communities built on trust, understanding, inclusion, and mutual respect.

We hope you can join us.

What an incredible day at the Eid Mela in Grove Park yesterday!

The park came alive with laughter, conversation, culture, and community spirit as families and friends gathered to celebrate Eid together.

Events like this are about more than celebration - they create opportunities for connection, understanding, and belonging. They remind us that our diversity is one of our greatest strengths.

A huge thank you to Sayd Ahmed for organising this wonderful event. We are also deeply grateful to everyone who attended, volunteered, performed, and supported the Eid Mela.

Together, we continue to build a stronger, more inclusive community where everyone feels welcome.

Eid Mubarak from all of us at RENS

As families and communities come together to celebrate Eid al-Adha, we reflect on the values that unite us all - compassion, generosity, and kindness.

This special occasion reminds us of the importance of supporting one another, sharing with those in need, and building stronger, more inclusive communities where everyone feels respected and valued.

May this Eid bring peace to every home, hope to every heart, and joy to all who are celebrating.

Wishing you and your loved ones a blessed and peaceful Eid al-Adha.
