‼ No matter what skin type you have - when it comes to UV radiation, there’s no such thing as a safe tan!

Tan seekers are at greater risk of skin cancer. Even if your skin tans rather than burns, the simple fact that your skin has changed colour is a sign of damage. It’s a warning sign that should act as a serious reminder that once the tan fades, the damage remains. Damage from UV is cumulative, irreparable and the direct cause of 90% of the world’s most common cancer!

☀ Want a tan? FAKE IT! 👍

Sadly, we have made the difficult decision to close the charity which has been consuming our efforts for the past 12 years. We've had such a blast and been humbled by all the support of stakeholders, supporters and feedback. We have helped youngsters understand how to keep safe in the sun from multiple primary schools in the area, attended fetes and events and have even attended presentations to adult groups. Thousands of youngsters have enjoyed making our UV wrist bands and we have often been invited back for follow up groups. However, It's been a really tough 4 years for us (as with all charities) a combination of covid, ill health, bereavement and work load pressures. Without the help and support of everyone we would have gone under a long time ago. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts and Mandy Jones' too. We will continue to keep the page open for anyone who might find it useful xx

I wonder if this will now progress or if it will be buried again.

‼ DID YOU KNOW SOME CLOUDS CAN INCREASE UV RADIATION AND DNA DAMAGE!

⛅️The effect of clouds on UV radiation is varied. Fully overcast skies lead to reductions in surface UV irradiance and scattered or broken clouds also cause reductions. However, albeit a complex subject, some clouds can actually create higher UV levels than perfectly clear skies!

⛅️Studies have shown that partially cloudy, or even overcast skies, have increased UV radiation by 25% at the earths surface (enhancement effect) and DNA damage by up to 40% through a combination of refraction and reflection.

⛅️Whilst the vast majority of us are unlikely to know when clouds are increasing the level of UV radiation, what we do know is that people often change their behaviour on cloudy days and spend increased time outdoors without sun protection.

‼ This common misconception lulls many people into a false sense of security which can result in very bad sunburn and increased risk of skin cancer.

🧐 CHECK THE UV INDEX - WHEN LEVELS REACH 3, USE SUN PROTECTION MEASURES - EVEN ON CLOUDY DAYS!!

☀ Both UVA and UVB radiation pe*****te the skin and cause cumulative cell damage that can lead to skin cancer.

UVB rays reach the outer layer of the skin (the epidermis) – they are known as ‘burning rays’ and are the primary cause of sunburn which is strongly linked to he development of melanoma.

UVA rays pe*****te the middle layer of the skin, (the dermis) they too contribute to skin damage and skin cancer and are also responsible for around 80% of the visible signs of premature ageing.

‼ PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE!
In addition to covering up with clothing (including a broad brimmed hat & sunglasses) and seeking shade when possible, MAKE SPF YOUR BFF! - Apply an SPF 30+ with 4/5 star UVA protection, liberally and evenly. Reapply it every 2 hours when outdoors for extended periods and wear it daily - all year round.

‼️ THIS NATIONAL SUNSCREEN DAY, WE SHARE OUR TOP TIPS TO ENSURE YOUR SUNSCREEN PROVIDES YOU WITH MAXIMUM PROTECTION - TO REDUCE YOUR RISK OF THE WORLD’S MOST COMMON CANCER!

☀️ Use an SPF 30 or above to provide high protection against the sun’s UVB (burning) rays.

☀️ Make sure your sunscreen provides high protection against UVA. Use a 4 or 5 star rated product for superior protection.

☀️ Make sure it’s is in date! Sunscreen typically expires 3 years after it’s manufactured. If an expiry date is not displayed, look for an open jar symbol which will contain a number (i.e. 12M) - that’s the number of months you can safely use the sunscreen after opening.

☀️ Store in a cool, dry place! Sun protection products can expire sooner if they are left out in the sun or in a hot car because heat causes the ingredients to break down and lose efficacy!

☀️ Apply to all exposed skin liberally and evenly! People commonly don’t apply enough! It should be applied generously to provide the required level of protection.

☀️ Apply 20 minutes before going outdoors and apply another layer applied once out. Think of it like painting a wall, you need at least 2 coats to provide adequate and even coverage!

☀️ Regardless of the instructions, all sunscreens should be re-applied at least every 2 hours (more often if perspiring) and always straight after swimming!

☀️ Don’t be mislead by claims that SPF in cosmetic products such as moisturiser or foundation will provide the same protection as a ‘proper’ sunscreen. They Don’t!

☀️ Wear it daily, all-year-round! UVA stays more-or-less the same strength all day, every day of the year and can damage our skin even in the winter months.

☀️ Protecting children? Use an SPF 50+ sunscreen with five star UV protection specifically formulated for children or babies as these are gentler on their sensitive skin.

☀️ Always use sunscreen in combination with other sun protection measures! Cover up with clothing including a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses - and seek shade between peak UV hours (11am-3pm).

🎗️ May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month! 🎗️

Throughout this month, we're joining the fight against skin cancer by spreading awareness about prevention, early detection, and the importance of sun safety. Here's how you can get involved:

🔍 Know the Signs: Learn how to recognise the warning signs of skin cancer, including changes in moles or spots, new growths, or sores that don't heal. Early detection can save lives!

🌞 Practice Sun Safety: Protect your skin from the sun's harmful UV rays by wearing sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, seeking shade during peak sun hours, and wearing protective clothing like hats and sunglasses.

💬 Spread the Word: Share educational posts, resources, and personal stories about skin cancer awareness on social media to help inform and inspire others to take action.

Let's come together this Skin Cancer Awareness Month to raise awareness, promote prevention, and support those affected by skin cancer. Together, we can make a difference!

So excited to hear the trial skin cancer vaccine for melanoma has commenced. Praying it is successful. However, it is not designed to prevent initial skin cancer so being vigilant and is still key.
