National FASD’s chief executive Sandy Butcher and birth mum Jan Griffin took part in the national FASD clinic’s away day on Thursday 28 May. They led a brainstorming session on future directions for the clinic and shared lived experience throughout the day.

Sandy said, “It was a privilege to be asked back again. The team that Prof Raja Mukherjee has pulled together is so talented, caring, and forward looking. Sitting with them more than 10 years after my own son’s diagnosis at the clinic I was reminded again as a parent this is exactly the type of team you can trust to help find a way forward for your loved ones. It's so impressive they do all that and contribute their expertise to international research and supporting others trying to promote awareness and change. Seeing behind scenes it's obvious the planning and care that makes that all possible."

Today on International Day of the Midwife, we’re thanking midwives for the vital role they play in supporting women, talking about alcohol and pregnancy and helping to prevent FASD.

Today, we celebrate everything midwives are already doing, and we also pause to reflect on what more can be done – from better training and resources to more time and support for these crucial discussions in every antenatal contact. Midwives are at the heart of FASD prevention, and we are proud to support them.
