Today, we placed a poppy cross on each of the war graves in St Andrew’s Churchyard, North Weald. A simple act of remembrance for those who served and whose lives were lost. 🌺
Among those resting here is Pilot Officer Montagu Leslie Hulton-Harrop of No. 56 Squadron, RAF North Weald. Aged just 26, he became the first RAF Fighter Command casualty of the Second World War on 6 September 1939.
He was killed when his Hurricane was mistakenly shot down by RAF Spitfires during the tragic incident known as the Battle of Barking Creek, just three days after Britain entered the war.
His grave is a reminder of North Weald’s place in our national history—and of the individual lives behind every name we remember.
As Remembrance approaches, we honour all those buried here and the families who loved them.
We will remember them.
