Big Breakfast Plus in Swindon

Big Breakfast Plus in Swindon Big Breakfast Plus is a volunteer led charity (1197825)
Serving freshly cooked breakfasts to the hungry in Swindon in a warm and welcoming environment.

We are entirely self-funded and are dependent on grants and donations. BBPlus bridges a gap not covered by other agencies. We concentrate on providing a very specific service i.e. a healthy breakfast. All too often, those of us who have a choice may decide to skip breakfast. But, for homeless people or those without access to cooking facilities, any hot meal is a bonus and breakfast isnโ€™t an optio

nal extra. It may be a lifesaving source of nutrition, especially for those with addictions that may make them increasingly vulnerable later in the day. Crucially, too, not only is the food hot but it's cooked to order, providing choice for vulnerable people living very chaotically, and who have little control over their lives. Whilst BBPlus has very specific objectives, we work in partnership with other organisations and statutory agencies. The relaxed, safe and informal environment at Big Breakfast Plus provides an opportunity for Outreach workers to engage with our guests, many of whom donโ€™t want to talk initially, and introduce them to / signpost appropriate support โ€“ whether that is to provide warm clothing, bedding and other necessities, or to access benefits, medical attention, hostel accommodation and, crucially, a housing options assessment.

Our Sunday team have finished Volunteers' Week strong with 125 breakfasts. Across the week, our volunteers have served 750 breakfasts!

Thank you to all the volunteers that make this possible including our breakfast shift volunteers, our trustees, those that help with events, and everyone that contributes with donations and other activities. We literally couldn't do this without you.

The weather might have turned, but the Saturday team were full of smiles yesterday as they served up 105 breakfasts and 45 fruit bags. Some of our regular Saturday volunteers are on holiday at the moment, including our regular Saturday Lead. We wouldn't like to say that while the cat is away the mice will play, but rumours abound one of our volunteers posed for a photo wearing the A-board.

Breakfast shifts are busy so it's important to have some fun when we can.

We've been having a lot of busy days recently, frequently serving over 100 breakfasts. That makes Friday's 99 sound quieter by comparison, but with 56 fruit bags on top the team were busy throughout.

Last year, our volunteers put in over 10,000 hours between them. Each volunteer shift runs for 2.5 hours but it probably felt longer for this week's Thursday Team who were working without the help of our plumbed in urn.

The old urn came to the rescue, but manually filling and refilling it takes time and when things are busy there's always the risk we'll go through the hot water faster than it can heat it up. Thank you Thursday Team for rising to the challenge and serving 101 breakfasts today.

Fingers crossed the engineers can fix the plumbed in urn before the weekend.

Congratulations to all

We are delighted to announce that the Building Bridges Programme has been awarded grant funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, enabling us to continue supporting people across Swindon and Wiltshire until 2029.

For almost 10 years, Building Bridges has delivered a trusted employability and education programme designed to help local residents who face barriers to develop their skills, build confidence, engage with their communities, gain qualifications and move closer or into employment.

We would like to thank The National Lottery Community Fund which has been part of the Building Bridges story since the launch of the programme in 2016. We would also like to thank our fantastic team for the ongoing support they offer to participants and we are looking forward to the next phase of the programme.

About ten minutes after smiling for the camera, this morning's Wednesday team found themselves dealing with disaster when our urn developed a fault and flooded the area behind the counter.

Thank you to the team for holding it together while chaos rained down, and for pushing through to serve 75 breakfasts.

We never know how busy each morning will be. Sometimes we open the doors and only (only) serve 68 people. This morning, our Tuesday team served a whopping 135 breakfasts and gave out 75 bags of fruit. We think that's pretty good going in an hour and a half.

Without our amazing volunteers, we wouldn't be able to serve anywhere near that number of breakfasts. We know you don't do it for thanks, but we are truly thankful for the time you give to others.

Happy Volunteers' Week! ๐ŸŒŸ

This week, we celebrate and thank the people who make a difference every day through their generosity, kindness, and commitment.

We have had the best start to the week with our Monday Team, presenting Lead Volunteer Dana with a Hidden Hero award through Room to Reward, and the team recording a happy birthday video for June on her day off.

It's an early start to the day here, but we can't think of a better way to kick the day off.
