Thank you for being people we can rely on 😇🩵

There is a great deal of trust behind every Monday and Tuesday evening at the Pilgrim Centre.

We trust that meals will arrive hot, sandwiches will be ready and people will step forward when there is a space on the rota. Week after week, our volunteer cooks and sandwich makers do exactly that.

Your reliability means we can welcome around 200 people knowing there will be food available and that every contribution has been valued.

November rota call – cooks and sandwich makers needed

Our Monday and Tuesday evenings at the Pilgrim Centre depend on people stepping forward to help.

We are now planning our November rota and would love to hear from anyone who can cook a hot meal or make sandwiches for one of our sessions.

Hot meals: Cook 25 portions at home in foil trays with lids. Meals need to arrive hot, as we do not have reheating facilities on site.

Sandwiches: Prepare around 30 sandwiches at home, individually wrapped and ready to serve.

If you can help for one evening, please message us via Facebook Messenger. One rota slot helps us have a hot meal and snacks ready for around 200 people each week.

Behind every meal

By the time a meal reaches the Pilgrim Centre, someone has already thought about what to cook, bought the ingredients, prepared the food and arranged the drop-off.
The same care goes into every batch of sandwiches made, wrapped and delivered ready to serve.

These tasks may happen quietly at home, but their impact is felt by around 200 people every week.

To every cook and sandwich maker who puts such care into helping people they may never meet, thank you. Your generosity is at the heart of what makes these evenings possible:

Christmas Cheer: help someone feel remembered this Christmas

Christmas can be a difficult and lonely time when you are already facing uncertainty.

Through our Christmas Cheer appeal, we want the people we support to know they have not been forgotten. We are collecting filled shoeboxes labelled male or female.

Please do not wrap the shoeboxes, but fill them up with a variety of goodies such as:
• Toiletries
• Chocolates
• A notebook
• A torch
• A travel mug
• Pens
• A hat, scarf or gloves

We are also asking for £5 Greggs vouchers, selection boxes, and new socks, boxers and knickers. Please do not include razors or alcohol in shoeboxes.

Each donation is a reminder that somebody chose to think of another person at Christmas.

Thank you for making room to help

Our volunteer cooks and sandwich makers already have busy lives, families, work and responsibilities of their own. Yet every week, they make room to help someone else.

They add groceries to their shopping, spend time preparing meals and sandwiches at home, and make sure food reaches the Pilgrim Centre ready for Monday and Tuesday evenings.

That time is never taken for granted.

Because of you, around 200 people each week know there will be something to eat and people ready to welcome them.

Homelessness can happen to anyone

Homelessness does not have one face or one story.

It can follow the loss of a job, a relationship breakdown, ill health or circumstances that become too difficult to manage alone.

World Homeless Day takes place later this week. For Alternative Angels, it is a reminder of why support must always come with dignity, compassion and an open mind.

Every Monday and Tuesday, we welcome around 200 people to the Pilgrim Centre. Some need a hot meal or food to take away. Others may need clothing, conversation or simply a place where they will be treated without judgement.

We cannot solve every challenge someone is facing, but we can make sure they are met with kindness and know they have somewhere to turn.

Thank you to everyone who helps us provide that welcome each week.

As September comes to an end, we want to recognise the people who have helped us support 200 people at the Pilgrim Centre every Monday and Tuesday evening.

The meals, sandwiches and food donations you provide help make Alternative Angels a place where people can find practical support, a warm welcome and a hot meal.
