Thank you for the kindness that helps people feel confident again

For the last two weeks, Sylvester King from Route 8 Barbers North Swindon Orbital centre has been giving free haircuts at Alternative Angels. It’s a generous act that brings dignity, confidence and care to the people we support.

Last week he even brought two more barbers with him Theo and Lucas so more people could have a haircut. Alongside that, Route 8 Barbers is raising money for three local charities through home visits and early or late appointments, a brilliant way to turn everyday work into support for the wider community.

We’re honoured to be one of the charities chosen, alongside others doing important work across Swindon. Thank you to Sylvester and everyone at Route 8 Barbers for backing local causes so thoughtfully and generously. Please do support them if you can. Local businesses like this make a real difference.

Thank you for turning “food support” into real community

It’s easy to talk about numbers: 25 meals, 30 sandwiches, up to 200 people supported each week.

But what you create is so much more than a number. You create a place where someone can be greeted by name, eat something warm and delicious, and feel human again, even if life feels heavy.

Whether you’re cooking at home, making sandwiches, delivering them, or helping at the Pilgrim Centre, you’re part of a community of care that holds the whole evening together.

Thank you for bringing that care with you, week after week. We’re so grateful:

Support available for rough sleepers during the heat 🔆

With temperatures rising above 30 degrees, the Government-backed Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) has been activated today (26 May).

We’re working with partners including The Haven Day Centre to provide extra shade, shelter, water and accommodation. Our outreach team is also out offering sun cream, water and support to anyone not yet ready to accept accommodation.

If you're concerned about someone, they can contact a Housing Options Officer at any time by calling 01793 445500. You can also raise an alert on the StreetLink website using the link in the comments or by emailing [email protected] so we can find them and offer support.

Our rough sleeper numbers remain very low, and we’re continuing to reach out and offer help wherever it’s needed.

Thank you for the comfort you bring to a hard week

For many of our guests, a warm plate of food isn’t just fuel, it’s comfort. It’s a reminder that someone cared enough to plan, cook, and show up.

Whether you’re batch-cooking at home, making sandwiches, or helping things run smoothly at the Pilgrim Centre, your kindness turns an ordinary Monday and Tuesday into something steadier and softer for the people who need it most.
Because of your behind-the-scenes effort, we’re able to feed up to 200 people every week with warmth, nourishment and dignity, and create a space where people can have a chat and feel less alone.

Thank you for keeping that going, week after week. It’s noticed. It’s appreciated. And it changes things.

Rota Call – We Need a Few More Helping Hands

On Monday and Tuesday evenings, Alternative Angels supports up to 200 people at the Pilgrim Centre with hot meals, sandwiches, drinks, and a warm welcome, something we can’t do without our community.

We’re looking for a few more helping hands to join the rota, especially cooks and sandwich makers:

💙Hot Meals Rota – Cook 25 meals/portions at home in foil trays with lids (approx. 20.5 x 11 x 5.5cm / size 6a). Meals must be hot on arrival (we don’t have reheating facilities), so please keep trays in the oven on low until you leave. Drop-off at the Pilgrim Centre between 18:10–18:25.

🩵Sandwich Rota – Prepare approximately 30 sandwiches at home, individually wrapped and ready to serve.

If you can help, even for just one evening, please send us a message via Facebook Messenger to join the rota.

Thank you for the care that goes into every single detail

Some kindness is loud. Most of yours is quiet, and it’s exactly what makes our Monday and Tuesday nights work.

It’s the way you cook with thoughtfulness, portion carefully, label trays, wrap sandwiches one by one, and still get everything delivered on time after a long day.
Those small details come together in a place where up to 200 people each week can eat, breathe, and feel treated with dignity.

Thank you for showing up and making a real difference:

Mental Health Awareness Week

It’s Mental Health Awareness Week, and an important moment to remember that wellbeing isn’t just about what’s happening in our heads, it’s shaped by what’s happening in our lives from stability, safety and connection, to being treated with dignity.

Every Monday and Tuesday at the Pilgrim Centre, we see how a warm meal and a steady welcome can help someone exhale. A calm space. A friendly chat. A place to feel seen, even for a moment, when everything else feels heavy.

Because of our volunteers and supporters, up to 200 people each week receive nourishment, warmth and connection. Thank you for making our community a little safer and a little kinder.
