Girlguiding Old Town District

Girlguiding Old Town District We empower girls and young women to be true to themselves and overcome challenges, in a safe, fun and adventurous space.

This page is managed by volunteers for a specific local Girlguiding district. We are part of Girlguiding, the UK’s leading charity for girls and young women. We provide a safe space in the Old Town area of Swindon in which girls can be themselves, try new things, have fun, develop skills and confidence, and build friendships. We run Rainbows (5–7 years), Brownies (7–10 years), Guides (10–14 years)

and Rangers (14–18 years). Young women aged 18-30 can get involved in activities just for them through the Girlguiding Inspire community too. To register a girl to join Girlguiding visit www.girlguiding.org.uk/joinus/. Anyone can get involved in making guiding happen in the Old Town area! The power and magic of Guiding ✨

I posted about a broken tent pole and within hours a Guider I’d never met got in touch. She doesn’t live locally, but works in Swindon and offered—casually, like this is normal—to detour on her way home and help fix it.

So we ended up in my work car park doing full-on tent pole surgery. Tools out, sections sorted, teamwork in action. ⛺️🛠️

Stranger → Guider → lifesaver in under 24 hours.

This is the bit people don’t always see about Guiding: the quiet, instant “I’ve got you” from someone who simply understands.

Genuinely wow. And thank you 💛

Another vital camp prediction:

What will run out first?

This is not about survival… it’s about priorities.

Options:

* Chocolate (high risk, high reward)
* Crisps (silent but rapid disappearance)
* Squash (hydration negotiations begin)
* “Emergency biscuits” (which were never actually meant to be eaten in emergencies only)

Bonus question:
How long until someone asks “Is there any more food?” immediately after snack time?

Camp weather predictions are now open…

What are we realistically preparing for?

* Perfect sunshine and magazine-worthy moments
* Light drizzle (we can cope, probably)
* “Character-building” rain
* All four seasons within a 3-hour period
* The classic: dry everywhere except directly above the campfire

Whatever happens, morale will remain high… until someone’s socks get involved.

It’s a camp tradition at this point…

Somewhere between packing and arrival, the question always comes up:

“Can I bring my hair straighteners?”

Let’s predict when it happens:

* Day 1 unpacking (optimism is still high)
* Day 2 after the first “camp hair” experience
* Day 3 embracing the full outdoors aesthetic
* Already packed, just waiting for a loophole in the rules

For clarity: camp hair is part of the experience. It builds character. 😄

🚨 THIS IS NOT A DRILL 🚨
3rd Calne Rainbows needs a hero. Cape optional. 💙

This is a plea from our friends at 3rd Calne Rainbows.

They don’t need someone with super strength.
They don’t need someone who can fly.
They don’t even need someone who knows how to tie a reef knot.

They just need someone willing to give a little time to help girls continue having adventures, building confidence, making friends, and creating memories that last a lifetime.

Without volunteers, units can’t run. It’s really that simple.

Could you be the hero of the hour and help save 3rd Calne Rainbows?

It’s nearly camp season, which means one thing:

The annual “I definitely packed it… I swear” moment.

Every year there’s at least one item that takes a surprise holiday of its own.

So what’s your prediction for this year’s most forgotten kit item?

* Sleeping bag (bold. very bold.)
* Torch (instant regret after dark)
* Socks (never enough. never.)
* Toothbrush (fresh breath becomes optional)
* Water bottle (hydration is just a suggestion apparently)

Bonus points if you’ve ever had to improvise a replacement using a tea towel and determination.

Guide Camp for 12th Swindon Guides and Rangers is getting closer… which means it’s time for our highly scientific (and absolutely accurate) prediction series.

First up:

How long will it take the girls to put the tents up?

Cast your vote 👇

* 10 minutes (optimistic leader energy)
* 30 minutes (realistic chaos unfolding)
* 1 hour + a debate about which peg goes where
* “We appear to have built a modern art sculpture instead of a tent”

Bonus predictions welcome:
How many times will someone say “I think this bit goes here… maybe?”

And how many leaders will quietly fix something without anyone noticing? 😄

Let the forecasting begin…

Also…..Supporting evidence has been provided below. Please review carefully before casting your vote. Our legal team has advised us not to comment on the structural integrity of the final result. 🏕️

🏕️ Saturday morning as a Girlguiding volunteer:

Normal people: relaxing with a coffee.

Us: standing in a local park assembling tents to make sure they’re ready for camp next weekend.

Yes, we got some strange looks.

Yes, the park Rangers thought this was perfectly normal behaviour and happily let us carry on.

And honestly… if these tents could talk, we’d probably need legal advice.

These tents have seen around 12 years of adventures. They’ve survived torrential rain, heatwaves, muddy fields, forgotten mallets, enthusiastic campers, and countless renditions of campfire songs.

Until today.

After over a decade of loyal service, we’ve suffered our first real casualty.

One middle pole.

One.

After everything else these tents have endured.

So, over to Vango…

How many camp memories is a tent pole expected to survive, and more importantly… what are the chances of finding a replacement before next weekend? Asking for several slightly nervous Guides. 👀🏕️
