In Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Nightingale,” the emperor and his court abandon the song of a living nightingale for a jeweled mechanical bird. The living bird flies away and is banished from the kingdom. The artificial bird eventually breaks down, and five years later the emperor lies dying. Death sits on his chest wearing his crown and holding his sword and imperial banner, while the emperor’s good and bad deeds gather around his bed.

Then the living nightingale returns and begins to sing outside the window. Even Death stops to listen. The bird demands the emperor’s sword, banner, and crown in exchange for its songs, and Death gives back each one. Finally the nightingale sings of the quiet churchyard, and Death longs for his own garden and leaves through the window. By morning, the emperor is awake and well.

FORGING FANTASTICAL

Greek Myths and Legends
SATURDAY 14th NOVEMBER 2026

Greek Myths and Legends
Eastcott Community Centre, Swindon
Suitable for ages 14+

An evening of traditional Greek tales told for adults with Maria Credali.

Step into a world where gods walk among mortals, fate cannot be escaped, and every choice echoes through eternity. This evening of traditional storytelling brings the myths of ancient Greece vividly to life—tales of love and vengeance, hubris and heroism, beauty and betrayal.

Hear of powerful deities and flawed heroes, of mortals who dared to challenge the will of the gods. These are stories filled with passion, danger, and dark humour—where triumph is never simple, and the cost of glory is often high.

Told in the living oral tradition, each story unfolds afresh in the moment—rich, immersive, and unforgettable.
