One of the biggest myths about trauma-informed care is that it's a soft option. That it means letting things slide, or making excuses for a child.

It isn't. It's about understanding.

Behaviour doesn't happen in a vacuum. So before we jump to "how do we stop this?", it can help to ask "what might this be communicating?"

In practice, trauma-informed care means thinking about three things:

πŸ›‘οΈ Safety β€” does this person feel safe?
🀝 Connection β€” do they feel understood?
βœ… Choice β€” do they have some control?

And it means looking beyond the behaviour itself. A child who refuses to engage might not be "difficult" β€” they might be overwhelmed. A child who lashes out might not be "naughty" β€” they might be struggling to regulate.

None of that means there are no boundaries. Boundaries still matter, and children need them. But we can hold those boundaries with calm, consistency and compassion rather than fear.

Because the goal isn't simply "how can I get them to behave?" It's "how can I help them feel safe enough to manage what they're experiencing?"

Small changes in how we respond can make a big difference.

Understand first. Respond second. πŸ’š

When we talk about trauma, most people picture one big, terrible event. But developmental trauma often isn't like that at all.

Sometimes it's what happens when difficult experiences repeat through childhood β€” neglect, instability, abuse, loss, domestic conflict, or simply living with constant stress and never quite feeling safe.

And it affects far more than a child's emotions. It can influence how they think, how they learn, how they respond to the world, how they connect with other people, and whether they feel safe enough to do any of it.

Which is why behaviour can sometimes look confusing. A child might seem angry, withdrawn, controlling, anxious, or unable to concentrate. From the outside, it can look like a child who won't listen. Underneath, it's usually a child telling us something they haven't got the words for yet.

Behaviour is communication.

So instead of asking "what's wrong with them?", it can help to ask "what might have happened?" and "what might they need from me right now?"

A child's experiences can shape their development β€” but they don't have to define their future. With safe relationships, understanding, and the right support, children can heal, grow, and thrive.

Understanding is where support begins. πŸ’š

Understand the behaviour. See the person. Offer hope.

Introducing the Wibbly Woobly Ones πŸŒ€

We're so excited to share this new series of short stories, written to help children understand sensory regulation and neurodiversity β€” through characters they can relate to.

Every day looks a little different when the world feels too loud, too bright, or too much. The Wibbly Woobly Ones follow a group of characters as they each navigate their own sensory challenges β€” big feelings, tricky textures, overwhelming noise β€” and find their own way through.

They're for children, but honestly, we think the grown-ups around them will learn something too.

When supporting a child with ALN, every step matters πŸ’š

You don’t need to have all the answers straight away. Sometimes all you need is a place to start, a friend to lean on, and a way to stay organised 🫢

Take each meeting and conversation one step at a time. Protect your energy where you can and remember it’s okay to ask for support πŸ«‚

You are doing your best, and your best is enough!

We're Β£400 away. πŸͺ½

WINGS is one of the most ambitious projects Adenydd has taken on β€” putting our own expertise directly to work for Swansea families navigating the ALN system. But before it can launch, we need Β£1,500 pledged by 28 August to unlock match funding through the Big Give.

We're already at Β£1,100, thanks to some incredible local support. Now we just need that last push.

Pledge from just Β£100 β€” nothing paid until December, and nothing at all if we don't reach the goal together, so there's zero risk in backing us now.

PLEASE RESHARE πŸ’š

Every one of our Big Give pledgers has helped build something real. Swipe through to see what Medical Connections, Hengoed Care, Kate Rees Elite Physiotherapy, M G Osteopathy, Gower Heating Co., TCS Plant Hire and CVR helped us deliver through BUSS for Early Years, POISSD for Life and Learning, and Ffrindiau Annwyl since 2023. Pledged, doubled, and turned into real support for local children and families. πŸ’™

This year we're asking again β€” for WINGS, our newest project helping over 100 families in Waun Wen, Plasmarl and Craigfelen get the Additional Learning Needs (ALN) support their children are legally entitled to.

We need Β£1,500 pledged by local businesses and individuals (minimum Β£100) by 28 August. Nothing is paid today, and nothing at all if we don't reach the target together.

Here's where we need you: we can't reach every business or supporter ourselves, but you can. Please share this post. Send it to a business owner you know, tag someone who might pledge, share it in a local group. The right person seeing this at the right moment is often the difference between hitting Β£1,500 or falling short β€” every single share genuinely helps.
