Read Easy Stockport We offer free 1:1 confidential support with reading to adults who live in the Stockport area.

There are over 11,000 people locally who struggle with tasks that most of us take for granted such as reading an official letter. The Stockport group came together with enthusiasm during the pandemic and was determined that our mission to bring the joy of reading to others would be continued despite practical difficulties. Our Reading Coaches have been trained online and work with their Readers in

covid safe environments in the community such as libraries. We are always on the lookout for new members so if you like the sound of what we do and would like to become involved or know of anyone who might like help with their reading please contact Marie Joyce the Team Leader for Stockport.

R. I. P. Dolly Parton who did so much to further literacy with her Imagination Library for children inspired by the fact that her own father was illiterate. In a touching conversation with Apple Music's Kelleigh Bannen in 2023, Parton shared how she was inspired to start the Imagination Library because of her father's illiteracy.
Parton reflected, “Now that, that was a little story that started from an honest place...My Daddy couldn't read and write, and we were just mountain people and so many people in the mountains live so far back and have so many kids, the school house is too far away, you know? You have to walk to school to do whatever”
She went on to share how her father, Robert Lee Parton, had a large number of siblings, much like Parton herself, “Daddy was from a huge family as well...So Daddy, like so many people, had to stay home and didn't get a chance to go to school. And Daddy was always kind of embarrassed, but Daddy was so smart and I've often wondered what old Daddy might have done had he known how to read and write”.
