World Alzheimer’s Day in September was marked by Soroptimists this year in a variety of ways.
30 twiddle muffs knitted by Soroptimist friends and decorated by a Club member Jackie were donated by President Jane to the Vale Council to distribute to residents in the Vale living with Alzheimers. Mary Anne presented 50 muffs decorated by ladies in Dinas Powys Library and Activity Centre to Chrissy Darby of Home Instead.
Crafternoons devoted a session on September 21st to embellishing muffs while they enjoyed an afternoon of chatter and tea.
Barry and District Soroptimist are committed to supporting those living with Alzheimers and a number have been trained in becoming Alzheimer's friends.

Beach Survey 2026. 9 Soroptimists took part in the Marine Conservation Society’s Beachwatch Survey for 2026 at Jackson’s Bay, Barry Island in the morning, Sunday 27th September.
We were fortunate with the weather and avoided the forecast rain showers.
The beach looked pristine but we managed to find 4Kg of litter (though a lot of the weight was due to a wet t-shirt!)
The most numerous things we found were pieces of polystyrene from broken down food takeaway containers.
We were pleased that there were fewer cigarette ends and plastic nurdles than recent years.

Soroptimists Barry & District hosted a Macmillan Coffee Morning at the Barry Island beach huts on a lovely sunny day. The many homemade cakes were as good as ever. We raised £605.15, a magnificent sum!
We were so lucky with the weather and met some very interesting people. One lady with her son had recently arrived from Sydney and come to Barry Island because her aunt was a Gavin and Stacey fan! The dogs seemed to enjoy the day as well.

After the hot summer, Soroptimists Lynda Lott-Miller and Jackie Memory have been busy preparing the Sam Davies Courtyard for Autumn/Winter through to the Spring. The raised planters have been weeded and replanted to give year long interest and the pots have been given a cheery look with primulas and pansies underplanted with bulbs.
The patients, staff and relatives enjoy the tranquil space to take in the fresh air and relax among the pretty flowers.

A group of members braved the rain for an excellent visit to Horatio’s Garden in Llandough hospital. We were welcomed by the Head Gardener, the Patient Engagement Manager and volunteers.
After delicious home made cakes the Head Gardener gave a very informative and inspirational tour of the gardens. One plant even smelled like peanut butter!

A group spent a very interesting afternoon on a back stage tour of the iconic New Theatre in Cardiff.
Opened in 1906, it still hosts world class productions and remains one of the UK’s leading regional theatres.
Our journey behind the curtain took us through the dressing rooms, up onto the lighting and curtain platform with technical demonstrations, onto the stage and the auditorium. Theatre facts, stories and even a ghost story were very entertaining!

Three Soroptimist and adoptees of Barry Station Jackie, Mags and Lotty spread some cheer and smiles among passengers when they distributed bags of sweets on July 30th. Some ladies knew it was International Friendship Day and were surprised and delighted to receive the little gifts. President Jane Percy and President Elect Linda Jones agreed that it was lovely to witness Soroptimists in action bringing joy to travellers. The posters placed around the station highlighting International Friendship Day were also welcomed by Tracey in the Ticket office.

Crafternoon Workshop organised by founder members Jackie and Jane S took place at Golau Caredig.
The practical focus was to cut out and sew breast
drain bags for Llandough Breast Centre.

Newcomers included Delor, and Bev and we were also delighted to welcome Judith and Maureen Morgan of SI Minerva Club. Judith is also the Regional P.A.Officer and she was pleased to join the practical session and roll up sleeves cutting out.

Delor, Linda and Bev were busy sewing up bags and straps and Jane S demonstrated some construction techniques .

President Jane thanked all participants for their efforts, their sociability and for lively discussion!

Judy and Jackie were delighted to attend an event celebrating Dr Susy Rogers' 50 years as a Lifelong Learner at the University of South Wales (1976- 2026). Susy, a longstanding Soroptimist since 2004 and now a member of Barry & District Club, gave a fascinating presentation on her journey through education - her 3 Bachelor's Degrees, 5 Master's Degrees, 1 Phd achieved and her continuing 2nd doctoral study in Social Prescribing, "Arts on Prescription". Susy's achievements were recognised as truly inspirational. She acknowledged all the help she had received saying, "I am grateful for every student, every lecturer, every conversation, every challenge and every moment of growth”.
