End of Treatment Bells #celebratingmilestones We place bells into hospitals and treatment centres for children and adults with chronic illnesses to ring during or after their treatment.

Registered Charity Number: 1195482 We first came across End of Treatment bells whilst in Oklahoma with our daughter, Emma, who was 8 at the time and there to have Proton Beam Therapy following a diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma (a soft tissue cancer). Everybody would stop to watch as the next ringer took centre stage and it was amazing to see and to be a part of that celebration. We approached our hospital in Manchester to ask if we could place one there when Emma finished chemo and with the help of our friend Joe, we had one made and presented it to them on April 9th 2014, the day Emma finished her last chemotherapy session. The bell was a huge hit and other families embraced it the way we had - we were thrilled! We had another made for the day case unit as we knew that not all children finish treatment on the ward. We joined forces with Beads of Courage UK and Ireland and have since rolled out a NICU bell for babies on the Beads Program and a Milestone Bell which was created with Jane Brady, a secondary breast cancer patient who wanted everyone to feel they could ring a bell regardless of treatment stage. The bell is a symbol of hope for many patients and families who find themselves on this horrendous journey. We wanted to offer each patient the opportunity to celebrate milestones along the way, be that the end of treatment or just because they feel like it.

Every now and then, we are asked for bells in different languages. Bell 518 was made especially for a little girl to ring at her hospital which is the Ospedale San Giovanni in Switzerland. Her mum wanted the poem on it to be in Italian as they live in an Italian speaking canton and of course, we were only too happy to oblige.

As well as the bell that went to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, we donated our 91st Milestone Plaque too.

This ‘add on’ plaque has a different poem on it so patients can choose which poem they want to use when they ring the bell. It was written by a lovely lady called Jane Brady who has ongoing treatment for metastatic breast cancer. Jane wanted to ring the bell to celebrate milestones in her own treatment journey and wrote the poem to be more inclusive.

Of course, we don’t ever stipulate when someone should ring a bell. Originally, it was rolled out as an end of treatment bell (hence our name) but as time passed, it was clear that people wanted to ring it for many reasons. And we’re all for that! 🔔🙌🏻

Bell 517 has gone to Ward C2 at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and will be used as a mobile bell for families to ring.

This bell was sponsored by Sofia Honey Adcock. We asked her mum, Sammy, to tell us why she wanted to do this:

“Sofia Honey, 12, is a leukaemia survivor and wanted to make the bell more inclusive for everyone to be able to ring.

She understands that ringing the bell can symbolise the end of treatment, rather than necessarily meaning that the cancer is gone. She also knows that many patients may be wheelchair users or bedbound, so she wanted to create something that could be taken to them, or even moved outside to a beautiful location where they could ring it themselves.

Sofia Honey rang the bell herself in 2022 at both Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital and Addenbrooke’s Hospital, as she received treatment at both hospitals. They both hold a very special place in her heart.
