We’re expecting some rather unusual visitors at our next Arts Cafe 👀

Artist and performance poet Harvey Taylor is joining us for an evening exploring imagination, creative thinking and why making art matters.

Harvey will be getting us involved in a few creative exercises, alongside a conversation about how art can change the way we think and why creativity is so important to our communities. He’s also bringing along some characters from Dada Luz, his extraordinary imaginary civilisation, who’ll be joining us in character (so quite what to expect, we’re not entirely sure!)

The evening is also a chance to find out more about Harvey’s upcoming exhibition, Dada Luz, at bearstepsshrewsbury from 25 October to 7 November, with a special performance on Halloween.

At the heart of Dada Luz is a simple idea: artists create and enhance communities. Something we feel rather strongly about here at EBS 💛

As always, everyone is welcome, whether you’re an artist or just fancy an evening doing something a little different.

A proper introduction to 👋

Caris Jackson is a mixed media collage artist, tutor, and one of our resident artists here at English Bridge Studios.

Originally from Wolverhampton, Caris’s work has taken her all over the UK, from exhibitions and commissions at Latitude Festival and the London Hilton Metropole, to workshops and community projects with , Hay Castle, and the National Theatre’s Speak Up programme.

Closer to home, she’s become a familiar face across Shrewsbury’s creative scene. Here at EBS, she also runs Club Collage every month, a chance to get together, make things, experiment, swap ideas and see what can happen with scissors and a pile of paper ✂️

Meg caught up with Caris to chat about her work, what she’s been up to lately, and a little more about the story behind Club Collage.

A little reminder that our Creative Clearout is happening tomorrow, from 10am to 2pm.

Thank you to everyone who’s dropped things off for us this week. We’ve had a lovely mix of art and craft materials donated, all ready to find a new home rather than sit unused.

Pop in for a browse, pick up a few bits for your next project, and help us raise a little money for English Bridge Studios at the same time.

Join our resident artist Jacob Gourley this Friday for a full day of portrait painting with a professional model at the studios.

With time to really study your subject and work at your own pace, it’s a chance to get stuck into a portrait in the company of other artists. The session is untutored, so bring your materials and make the day your own. We’ve got easels and drawing trestles ready for you.

We’re having a Creative Clearout at English Bridge Studios on Sat 3rd October, 10am to 2pm!

If you’ve got art materials, fabric, paper, tools, crafty bits or anything else creative that you no longer need, bring them along to sell, swap or donate 🎨

You can also book a stall if you’ve got more to bring, or donate materials directly to EBS for us to sell on the day.

Money raised from donated items will go back into the building, helping us keep the studios open as an affordable place for artists, workshops, exhibitions, events and community projects in Shrewsbury.

Or just come for a rummage and see what you find 😄

Arts Cafe is joining Shrewsbury Pride this September 🌈

For our next session, Aaron and Robin are taking over EBS for an evening of q***r history, flower symbolism and making together.

Aaron will be sharing some of the stories behind LGBTQIA+ iconography and the flowers and symbols that have appeared throughout q***r history, before Robin gets everyone making their own little piece in response.

We’ll be painting, collaging, sewing and generally getting stuck into fabric, with everyone choosing a colour from the Pride flag. At the end, the pieces will come together to create one big community Pride flag, ready to be carried through Shrewsbury in the Pride march on Saturday 26 September 🌈

All materials are provided, although you’re very welcome to bring your own bits and pieces too. You can add your work to the community flag, make one to take home, or do both.

Tomorrow night is our August Arts Cafe, and we’re bringing back Share Your Sketchbook ✏️📖

The last one was such a lovely evening that we wanted to do it again, only this time with a bit more actual making. Bring your sketchbook, whatever you’re working on, or just come along and start something while you’re here. It doesn’t need to be finished or polished.All very welcome!

We’ll still be sharing sketchbooks and having a good nose through what everyone else has been making too (which is half the fun).

Tuesday 18 August, 7pm to 9pm at English Bridge Studios.
Tea and cake will of course be involved 💛

This Sunday, come and make something for perches.house 🌹

We’re opening the doors at English Bridge Studios for a Workshop Taster Day in support of Perches House and the Rebuild the House That Rose Built campaign.

Drop in anytime between 11am and 3pm. No need to stay for the full day, no need to book yourself into everything, just come when you can and have a go.

There’ll be gel printing with Harvey Taylor , party animals collage with Caris Jackson , lino printing with Josephine Bradbury and badge making with Designers and makers.

Workshops are £3 to £5, so you can try one, a few, bring someone with you or just call in to support the day.

We’ll also have a pop up shop selling artists’ work, with proceeds going to Perches House
