Cavell is the charity supporting UK nurses, midwives and nursing associates, working and retired, when they’re suffering personal or financial hardship often due to illness, disability, older age, domestic abuse and the ongoing cost of living crisis. The charity offers an effective, tailored packa

ge of support to help everyone who gets in touch. We give emotional support for those in crisis, advice on maximising benefits, signposting and referrals to specialist services, one-off grants to quickly relieve financial hardship and rapid emergency funding for those at great risk. From simple, essential support like money to replace a broken cooker or travelling expenses to medical appointments, to vital life changing aid like helping a family flee their home due to domestic abuse, Cavell is here to help. We welcome support from individuals and organisations who can donate or fundraise to ensure nurses, midwives and nursing associates receive vital help when they need it most.

In 2024 we launched a fund in partnership with The Julia Rausing Trust to support nursing professionals impacted by domestic abuse.

Since then, we’ve helped over 200 people, including one nurse who said, “The impact on our family has been life changing.”

When nurses face dangerous and distressing circumstances, Cavell and The Julia Rausing Trust is here to help ease financial pressures so they can begin to rebuild their lives.

This fund provides vital support when it is needed the most.

When Rai's daughter was born premature at 30 weeks gestation, she required round-the-clock care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

For two months, Rai lived a daily ordeal that no mother wants to go through – having to travel back and forth between her home and her baby.

Rai spoke to Cavell about her memories of this time, to celebrate the nurses that made all the difference during those difficult months.

She remembers: "There were so many machines and monitors on and around her, but thankfully she was a fighter. It was heartbreaking having to leave her behind. But I knew she was in the best place for the care she needed and I held onto that.”

Reflecting on the nursing care, Rai said: “When you are constantly preparing for the worst to happen, the kindness and professionalism of a nurse helps you to stay calm. They were always ready to explain something to me and answer any questions to put my mind at ease.”

Rai watched the neonatal nurses closely with admiration: “To sustain such positivity alongside the trauma they must go through dealing with emergencies for the tiniest of patients is a testament to their character.”

Rai’s story is a reminder that when the unexpected happens, nurses are there for us.

This week is Neonatal Nurses Week, recognising the profound strength of the profession and the impact that every nurse has for babies and families in their most vulnerable moments. Thank you for all that you do!

This is Andrew 👋

Andrew is a nurse working in ophthalmology as well as the emergency department, and he wants other nurses and midwives to know that it's ok to speak up and ask for help if you need it.

After his son was born, Andrew found himself in between jobs, with mounting financial pressure affecting his personal life and ability to give his usual 110% at work. Cavell offered support at the point where it had all got too overwhelming.

He said, “Without Cavell’s support, I truly believe the pressure and emotional toll would have continued to escalate making it more and more difficult to recover from. It would have just built up higher and higher, but with Cavell’s help, I’ve nipped it in the bud.”

He added, “receiving the grant provided stability at a time when I had very few realistic alternatives. Beyond the practical and financial side, the support has restored my hope and reminded me that nurses are not alone.”

When Sarah's mum needed palliative care, the ward nurses at Russell's Hall Hospital, The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, supported Sarah and her dad, too.

They were 'angels in disguise,' said Sarah. The level of attention to detail and care they showed the family during those difficult two weeks will always stay with her.

The hardest goodbyes can reveal the best of humankind, when nurses lead with empathy and make families feel less alone in their grief.

Members of The Worshipful Company of Nurses recently went to Belgium to visit historical landmarks associated with Edith Cavell and other significant WW1 locations.

The Master Christine Anderson and Immediate Past Master, Hilary Andrews, accompanied by members of the company laid a wreath in memory of Edith Cavell at Tir National in Brussels.

Among them was Cavell Star Award winner, Penny Chafer, Advanced Nurse Practitioner specialising in Respiratory Care, who said:

“It is so important to have appropriate role models within the nursing profession and the compassion, care and equanimity demonstrated by Edith Cavell sets the benchmark for nurses.

When visiting the Tir National in Brussels, we were able to reflect on the life of Edith Cavell. We got to see where Edith Cavell ran her nursing school and the prison where she was held, as well as the Belgian Senate in Brussels where her trial took place.

I felt huge respect and admiration for her work, her courage and ultimately steadfast faith in the face of a brutal ex*****on. There was also a sense of deep sadness that her life should be cut short so tragically.

My visit to Belgium reinforced my view that programmes like the Cavell Star Awards are so important in recognising the care and achievements of our nurses and health care professionals. This is even more important now in a changing world because it helps maintain a golden thread of history in recognising all that is good in the profession.

It represents a powerful legacy from Edith for all nurses to strive to do our best for our patients and colleagues as well as the profession."
