About Cavell:

When the nursing and midwifery family is going through tough times, Cavell gives help. Cavell is the charity supporting UK nurses, midwives and nursing associates, working and retired, when they’re suffering personal or financial hardship often due to illness, disability, older age, domestic abuse and the ongoing cost of living crisis. The charity offers an effective, tailored package of support to help everyone who gets in touch. We give emotional support for those in crisis, advice on maximising benefits, signposting and referrals to specialist services, one-off grants to quickly relieve financial hardship and rapid emergency funding for those at great risk. From simple, essential support like money to replace a broken cooker or travelling expenses to medical appointments, to vital life changing aid like helping a family flee their home due to domestic abuse, Cavell is here to help. We welcome support from individuals and organisations who can donate or fundraise to ensure nurses, midwives and nursing associates receive vital help when they need it most.

Edith Cavell is remembered for her bravery during the First World War, but there was a whole other side to her that often gets overlooked.

While working as a governess in Brussels, Edith answered a children’s questionnaire in the most unexpected way - she chose ‘R words for every single answer. Roses. Robin. Red. Reading.

It’s a charming glimpse into her personality and shows a playful, thoughtful young woman, long before she became a national heroine.

How much do you know about Edith Cavell? 🏥

As a British nurse, Edith is remembered for caring for injured soldiers regardless of which side they fought for during the First World War. She also helped allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium.

Her courage and compassion continue to inspire nurses and midwives today.

Today, as we mark 111 years since Edith Cavell’s death, we’re remembering her remarkable courage and compassion, which continue to inspire us every day.

Our CEO Lewis Allett joined many others in London this morning to lay a wreath in her memory and honour her enduring legacy.

Before she became the name behind our charity, Edith was a nurse who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the First World War and secretly helped more than 200 Allied soldiers escape occupied Belgium. Her bravery ultimately came at a great cost.

Despite her heroism, Edith was arrested, found guilty of treason and executed on October 12, 1915. But her commitment to stand alongside those who care for others remains at the heart of everything we do.

Over the course of this week, we’ll be sharing more about Edith and her remarkable story. Baby Loss Awareness Week is a time to remember the babies who were taken too soon, and to hold space for the families living with their loss.

It’s also a time to recognise the midwives who support families through these incredibly difficult times.

Emma and Guy share their experiences of baby loss, and the kindness and compassion they received from the midwives who cared for them.
