Why I Joined Prestwick Speechmasters

After a lifetime working in the financial sector, retirement gave me plenty of time for leisure activities. What I soon realised, however, was that I wasn’t doing anything to exercise the mental side of things.

So, what is Speechmasters?

Firstly, it’s a fairly old-fashioned name, dating back to when the club was established in 1954 as Prestwick Toastmasters before adopting the name Prestwick Speechmasters in 1973.

What do we do?

We meet every Monday evening during the autumn and winter months. Although we’re based in Prestwick, most of our members come from surrounding towns and villages. We’re also the only Speechmasters club in Ayrshire.

Each evening follows a similar format.

Round Robin – A question is put to the floor and everyone gives a brief opinion. It might be something like, “Do you think Glasgow hosting the Commonwealth Games is a good idea?” It’s a simple and enjoyable way to get everyone involved.

Topics – Each person is given a question and has the floor for up to two minutes to deliver an impromptu speech. It’s a great test of how quickly you can think on your feet and express your thoughts.

Speeches – There are usually three prepared speeches, lasting either eight or twelve minutes. These are always well researched, well delivered and genuinely interesting. They’re a key part of the evening, and every member has the opportunity to give a speech each month.

And of course, there’s tea, coffee, biscuits and plenty of good conversation. The evening finishes with constructive evaluations, where speakers receive positive feedback and helpful advice to improve their skills.

The club has a good old-fashioned sense of structure and formality, but it’s also relaxed, friendly and great fun.

These days, many of our members are retired, although we also have people who come along to build confidence, improve their public speaking, or develop skills that help them in the workplace.

If you’re looking for a bit of mental stimulation—or if you’re simply tired of another Monday evening in front of the television—why not come along and give it a try?

Like me, you might just discover that it provides the challenge, enjoyment and buzz you need to keep your brain active.

We will be back soon….well, the autumn. Keep tuned

We completed our 25/26 season with the AGM last night.

As always we are keen to attract new members ahead of the next session at the end of September.

We are open to coming to talk to other groups about Speechmasters. Explaining what an evening looks like and how it could be of interest and beneficial.

A superb evening with excellent speeches made by President Frank, Tony, Amanda and John. Chaired by Wellwood, evaluation by Jamie and minutes by Iain.

And of course tea and coffee by Richard.

It’s a team effort.
