For closed season some memories of former players.

With the naming today of the north stand we wanted to remember Neil McBain who’s sale to Manchester United in 1921 funded the building of the main stand at Somerset park.

Neil represented Ayr United as a player 111 times before the sale to Manchester United and had a quite remarkable career.

He played for Manchester United’s rivals Liverpool 12 times after also making 97 appearances for Everton.
Perhaps even more remarkable is the fact he still holds the record for being the oldest player to play a professional league game in England at the age of 51.

He managed in England and Argentina but had three spells as manager of Ayr United the last time being 1962-63.

He died in 1974 at the age of 78

What a remarkable Ayr United FC legend

We now have to replace Oakley’s 0 goals and 0 assists in 625 minutes played last season now he’s off to give fire power to Raith Rovers.

Hard task to find a striker that doesn’t score or assist in 625 minutes

Three years ago today Cutty and Jackie were together at Somerset the scorers of the two goals at that famous record attendance game against Rangers in 1969.

Cutty’s funeral arrangements were put out today reminding us how time goes by and things change.

One of the reasons we started the former players club when we did was so many of the players from that famous team were passing on and we wanted to reconnect them with each other and the fans. We wanted Ayr United to feel like a family we are all in fans, workers, players everyone together as part of the Ayr United FC family.

All at the former players are devastated to hear the news that Ayr United FC legend and former player Quinton Young “Cutty” has passed away.

Cutty was a member of the great team of 1969 that took Celtic to a replay in the cup semi final only losing in extra time and scored the first in the win over Rangers in the record attendance at Somerset. He went on to play for Coventry City FC and then Rangers FC winning the Scottish cup in 1974.

Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this time and all the supporters who have great memories of the player.
An honest man forever Cutty Young
