For closed season some memories of former players.
With the naming today of the north stand we wanted to remember Neil McBain who’s sale to Manchester United in 1921 funded the building of the main stand at Somerset park.
Neil represented Ayr United as a player 111 times before the sale to Manchester United and had a quite remarkable career.
He played for Manchester United’s rivals Liverpool 12 times after also making 97 appearances for Everton.
Perhaps even more remarkable is the fact he still holds the record for being the oldest player to play a professional league game in England at the age of 51.
He managed in England and Argentina but had three spells as manager of Ayr United the last time being 1962-63.
He died in 1974 at the age of 78
What a remarkable Ayr United FC legend
