In Messy Church we continued learning about heroes in the Bible and we discovered the story of Samson. A long time ago, God’s people were having a very hard time. They needed someone strong and brave to help them. So, God chose a baby who hadn’t even been born yet. His name would be Samson.

Samson grew up to be the strongest man anyone had ever seen. His strength didn’t come from eating lots of vegetables or lifting heavy stones. It came from God, and God told Samson never to cut his hair. As long as his hair stayed long, Samson would have special strength to help protect his people.

Samson did many brave things. Once, he fought off a lion with his bare hands. But Samson had an enemy named Delilah, who wanted to find out the secret of his strength. She kept asking him again and again. Finally, Samson told her the truth - that his strength came from God and that he must never cut his hair.

While Samson was sleeping, Delilah cut his hair. When he woke up, his strength was gone, and his enemies captured him. It was a very sad time for Samson.

But even though Samson had made mistakes, God had not forgotten him. Samson prayed and asked God to make him strong one more time. God heard him. Samson pushed with all his might, and the building came crashing down on top of his enemies. Samson saved his people, just as God had planned.

We had lots of fun with our crafts and worship. We tried to find out who was the strongest with arm wrestling competitions and some of our dads showed how strong they were by doing press-ups. We are thankful to everyone who helps with Messy Church each month.

As we approach World Cup season here are some interesting thoughts to ponder,,,,

Have you been watching Dear England, BBC One’s four-part series exploring Gareth Southgate’s time as manager of the England men’s football team?

It reminds us how easy it is to rush to the ending - the win - without the patience to build trust, unity and understanding along the way.

As Christians, we can face a similar temptation. In 1 Corinthians 9:24, Paul urges us to 'run in such a way as to get the prize', while reminding us of the importance of discipline along the journey.

Our own journey with God may have its ups and downs, much like a challenging tournament. But it is a journey held secure in God’s presence, filled with his love and hope.

We had a fabulous celebration of our junior church on Sunday led by our guests Hayley and Phil on the subject of being salt and light in the world. Our young people were, as ever, very inspirational with great participation in many different ways.

Mention must be made of our two young announcement readers who stole the show with their double act!

Our spirits were very lifted as can be seen by the enthusiastic participation in one if the favourite sings in junior church…. ‘My lighthouse’!

The day followed on with our monthly messy church…. Also a great time of celebration. Thank you to all our young people and leaders!
