📟Shout 25 of 2026📟

Portsmouth RNLI's volunteer crew were tasked at 11:11pm on Saturday 6th June to assist a Polish training yacht near the eastern approaches to Portsmouth Harbour after concerns were raised by Portsmouth VTS.

On arrival, the lifeboat crew found the yacht carrying nine people, struggling in heavy seas following engine and navigation equipment problems. The vessel had repeatedly drifted onto the Submarine Barrier and had already made contact with it, placing those onboard at risk.

With the skipper and trainee crew struggling to maintain a safe course, a lifeboat crew member was transferred onto the yacht to provide navigational assistance. The intervention helped restore control of the vessel and prevent further danger.

The yacht was then escorted safely back into harbour and alongside at Haslar Marina.
A great example of teamwork and seamanship from our volunteer crew in challenging conditions.

As Volunteers' Week comes to a close, Portsmouth RNLI is proud to celebrate the incredible dedication and achievements of our volunteer crew and supporters.

This week, volunteer Luke Kierman was presented with a Letter of Thanks in recognition of his outstanding contribution during his time as the station's Press Officer. Luke's dedication to sharing the work of the station, supporting media coverage, and helping organise and manage footage that highlights our lifesaving work at sea has played an important role in raising awareness of the RNLI's mission.

The station has also been honoured with the Portsmouth Civic Award for Outstanding Voluntary Service and Lifesaving Dedication. The award recognises the exceptional teamwork, commitment and leadership demonstrated by Portsmouth RNLI volunteers across countless emergency launches, consistently safeguarding the waters and community of Portsmouth.

These recognitions reflect the selfless commitment of all our volunteers who give their time, skills and expertise to save lives at sea.
Thank you to every volunteer who makes our lifesaving service possible. We couldn't do it without you.

A huge well done to Matt, who successfully passed his Shore Crew assessment on Wednesday evening👏🏻

Having only joined Portsmouth RNLI in January 2026, Matt has shown real dedication and commitment to his training. Passing his Shore Crew assessment is a significant achievement and marks the next step in his RNLI journey.

Matt will now begin working towards becoming part of our boat crew, continuing his training and development to support our lifesaving service both on shore and at sea.

Congratulations, Matt - a fantastic achievement in such a short time. We wish you every success as you take on this exciting new challenge! 🌊🚤

🤝Behind Every Rescue Is Teamwork🤝
On Tuesday evening, Portsmouth RNLI joined fellow RNLI stations, independent lifeboat organisations and emergency service partners for a collaborative familiarisation event at Gosport Marina, organised by HM Coastguard's Tom Barnett.

Bringing together teams from across the Solent, the event provided an opportunity to showcase the rescue assets available around our coastline and, more importantly, to strengthen the relationships between the organisations that work side by side during maritime emergencies.

Representatives from HM Coastguard, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary and South Central Ambulance Service were invited aboard a range of lifeboats and rescue craft to learn more about their capabilities, equipment and operational roles.

While every organisation has its own area of expertise, successful rescues often depend on effective teamwork. Opportunities like this help build a shared understanding of how we operate, ensuring a coordinated response when people need help most.

A huge thank you to Tom for organising the evening and to everyone who attended and shared their knowledge. We look forward to continuing to work together to keep people safe on and around the water.

⛵️MAY ROUNDUP⛵️

May has been another busy month for Portsmouth RNLI, with our volunteer crew responding to 10 taskings on the water.

From assisting vessels in difficulty to supporting those in need along our coastline, every shout highlights the variety of situations our crews can be called to attend. As we head into the busier summer months, demand for our service continues to increase, and our volunteers remain ready to respond at any time, day or night.

Alongside operational callouts, we've also celebrated some fantastic training achievements:

🧭 1 new Navigator pass-out
🚤 2 Tier 2 Atlantic pass-outs
🤝 A successful joint exercise with SCAS and Langstone Harbour Patrol

The joint exercise was a valuable opportunity to work alongside our emergency service partners, strengthening communication, coordination and our collective response capabilities. It's also been great to see crew members continuing to progress through qualifications, ensuring we maintain the skills and experience needed to deliver a safe and effective service.

A huge thank you to our volunteers for their continued dedication and commitment, and to everyone who supports Portsmouth RNLI. Your support helps make all of this possible🌊💙

After spending the day undertaking medical scenario training, our volunteer crew put those skills into practice for real when they were tasked at 8:38pm last night to an incident at Gunner Point.

Our D-Class lifeboat was launched to assist Hayling Island Coastguard Rescue Team and the Ambulance Service following reports of a young female who had fallen from a horse, sustaining suspected neck and spinal injuries.

Working alongside emergency service partners, the casualty was carefully assessed and immobilised before being transferred into the care of the waiting ambulance. We were also assisted by HART (Hazardous Area Response Team), and it was great to see a familiar face amongst them - one team member being a former crew member of Portsmouth Lifeboat Station!

We send our best wishes to the casualty and hope she makes a swift recovery💙

🚨 Multi-Agency Exercise in Langstone Harbour🚨
Please note: all casualties and incidents described below formed part of a planned training exercise and were fully simulated.

Today Portsmouth RNLI volunteer crew joined colleagues from South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS) and Langstone Harbour Board for a multi-agency training exercise in Langstone Harbour.

The scenario involved a simulated explosion aboard a vessel alongside a pontoon, leaving multiple casualties with a range of serious injuries requiring urgent rescue and medical treatment. The Harbour patrol were first on scene to assess casualties and coordinate the initial response, before Portsmouth RNLI launched its D-class lifeboat with four volunteer crew members onboard to assist.

RNLI crew provided immediate casualty care and began Basic Life Support (BLS) on a training dummy representing a casualty in cardiac arrest. SCAS crews then arrived to continue treatment, carrying out advanced life support procedures for the critically injured casualty and administering pain relief and further medical care to stabilise others involved.

The two-hour exercise allowed all agencies to practise working together in a realistic environment, review operational procedures, and share knowledge of equipment and medical capabilities to help strengthen future emergency responses on the water.

A huge thank you to everyone involved for their time, professionalism and continued support in helping keep our waters safe.

📟Shouts 17 & 18 of 2026📟

A busy Bank Holiday Monday for our crew at Portsmouth RNLI, with two separate launches keeping the station active from the early hours through to the evening.

Our first tasking came at 01:00, launching our Atlantic 85 to assist South Central Ambulance Service in conducting a welfare check on an individual. The crew remained on scene supporting partner agencies until the incident was successfully resolved at 03:03.

Later in the day, at 19:34, the pagers sounded once again following reports of individuals shouting for help from a boat. Launching the D-Class, our crew worked alongside Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary and Portsmouth CRT to bring the situation to a safe conclusion, with the incident resolved at 21:26.

Thank you to all agencies involved and, as always, to our volunteer crew who continue to answer the call at any hour, day or night.
